Thanks for the cd, Ron! My Cold Dead Hand rocks (I especially love "Flowers of Evil" & "We'll Be Together Again (Someday)" and I'm suggesting you for some upcoming gigs! :)
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your bandmate. I hope he's happier in some way in some kind of other place. We can always hope. I'm all for donating for awareness. Count me in. I lost a best friend the same way. LOVE, Hill
I Know this a is long fucking comment and it cut me off below. This is where it cut me off, so read the one below and then go up to here if you want:
It is the embodiment of humility.
Wabi historically meant wretched, miserable and forlorn referring to the dreary state of the human condition. With regards to art and design, it connotes a modesty of choice, a naturalness that is unassuming, referring to auserity for design without severity.
Sabi, on the other hand, is spoken of that which is mellowed by use, patinated by age, reticent and lacking in the assertiveness for the new. It also means austere and lonely. Things rusty, worn, or tarnished exhibit the quality of maturity that is sabi. . . it is a quality that can only be achieved through long years of existance."
MY COLD DEAD HAND shares these qualities.
There is a Japanese term, Wabi Sabi. It's connotation has changed much over the years. It once referred to things somewhat negatively as old and worn. Over the years, through a growing respect for things that have survived the test of time and the qualities of knowledege and beauty formed from surviving many storms, Wabi Sabi now refers to things THAT CARRY THE ENERGY OF NATURE AND TIME in its weatheredness (My version of the definition).
Anyway, Like a gorgeous piece of driftwood covered in spinning lines, cracks and water marks from floating through and over many thousand fathoms, under hundreds of suns and moons - MY COLD DEAD HAND is wabi sabi.
The songs on this page although rocking come nowhere near the wabi sabi expression that happens in the live show. I saw them last night for the first time. I can't shake my nautical analogies on last night's show. It was like a voyage in an old but seaworthy wood ship bound together down-below with iron framework. Kieth's vocals weaving in and out of his spooky slamming, chunky and slide guitar work along with the same qualities on the bass from Ron and Jamie's keyboard creeping under and through it like an unseen but heard and felt sea creature and the drummer (don't know his name)The drummer! timing all of this with hard blasting waves against the hull . . .Aw man, it fucking rocked and was an adventure filled with discovery, near death and a glorius completion.
MY COLD DEAD HAND's music, more on the wabi sabi connection; Take what you will from it. Here is a quote pulled from Wikipedia: "that has been formed in particular acceptance and contemplation of the imperfection, constant flux, and impermanence of all things."
And from Wabi Sabi Style by James and Sandra Crowley, "Although the concepts within wabi sabi style are essentially simple, there are depths and nuances of meaning that elude the casual explanation. Wabi is the antithesis of pretention and ostentation. It
