You've reached the guitar gear page of Jamie Cambers. I'm a guitar geek, for sure. At gigs, I often get questions about gear or my tone, so I thoguht this would be a cool way for people to find out more about my gear. On this page you'll see my full guitar rig including the guitars I play, the amp I use, and my plethora of effect pedals. Before all that, here's some musical info about myself:
I play in a band called the Somers (aka: JSB). We're a worship (alternative, brit, hard) rock band. I guess we kinda sound similar to bands like the David Crowder Band, Mercy Me, Delirious, or Coldplay. Those bands are great, but lets be honest... every band wants to sound like 'themselves'.
In February of 2005, we released our debut record called "the Origin of Moonlight". We're proud of how this low-budget, basement-studio recording turned out, and we're happy with the success it has brought us so far. Our first single, "Poetry in Motion", hit #1 across Canada according to More Radio's pop-rock charts, and we also released two more single, "Sovereign Lord" and "Faithful" (which hit #8 in January 2007's Top 10). We're now in the process of demoing a new record and the songs sound great so far.
Anywho... back to the gear... Here's my current guitar rig setup. This has been my "intended rig" for a while now.
Guitars:
PRS Swamp Ash Special (2005)
1999 Fender Lonstar Strat (2006)
Martin OM-16 (2004)
Harmony Tenor Acoustic (1960's) Given to me by my mother-in-law, you'll only ever see this guitar for when we play "Merciful" or any other song in need of a trashy banjo or guitar part.
The PRS is my main guitar. It's got the "Les Paul sound with a Fender feel" which is important to me. Between the neck and bridge humbuckers is a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail which, when the tone knob is pulled up, gives me my single-coil sound. The Strat is for when I want a particular strat sound. It'll come out more on stage as J, our other guitar player, plays piano/keys on stage.
Pedals/Efx:
pedalboards.com true bypass A/B/Y strip & Tuner Mute
Boss TU-2
Line 6 DL4 [x2]
HAO Rust Driver
Ibanez TS9
MXR Phase 90
MXR DynaComp
Fulltone Octafuzz
*Danelectro Tuna Melt
*Digitech Whammy IV
*Dunlop 535 Wah
(Pedals with a * are in a pedalboards.com true bypass strip)
I can capture just about any sound I need with these pedals. I love using delay, so that's why I have two DL4 pedals. I use one more than the other, so the 2nd is there as a backup. The TS9 is pretty much on all the time, since I don't usually use a completely clean sound. I use a the DynaComp to beef up my single-coil sounds or to add some sustain to humbuckers.
I'm pretty much covered in the "overdrive/distortion/fuzz" category; I've got light overdrive (TS9), medium "plexi"-type overdrive (HAO), and a fun Hendrix-like Fuzz in the Fulltone Octafuzz though my main distortion comes from my Amp.
I use a true bypass switch made by Tom Peck @ pedalboards.com to switch between the clean/dirty channels on my amp. That same strip has a Loop that the Wah, Whammy, & Danelectro Trem are in. It is used to take the pedals out of my signal chain when not in use.
Amp:
Morris Amps modded '76 Twin Reverb Head w/ matching Morris 212 cab (loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's).
This amp was custom made for me by Glen Morris. He's a FANTASTIC amp builder and knows everything about amps; literally. He's based out of Niagara, ONT. He nailed the exact sound that I wanted from both the clean and dirty channels. He even threw in some surprises for me like a boost pedal, bite switch, and fat/raw knob.
Glen turned a beat-up, vinatge 1976 Fender Twin Reverb combo into a 2 channel head.
Glen even custom designed the look of the amp to look taller than a Bassman head, but shorter than a silverface Bandmaster head. With the wine colored tolex and Marshall small-weave cane grillcloth I chose, the amp looks vintage in appearance. However, underneath this 100w monster, lies a vintage Fender clean and a dirty channel reminiscent of a Soldano SLO100 or Bogner Shiva. That being said, I have honestly never heard a dirty channel quite like this one; it's gainy, gritty, and has a tight bottom-end. An original sound Glen has shaped for my specs (and utter enjoyment). The sustain is awesome, yet ends in an octave-up overtone that you can hear in some live Jimi Hendrix tracks.
Then he custom modded a mojotone 212 cab into his own Morris Muscle 212 after putting some finishing touches on it and sticking some Celestion Vintage 30's inside to get the punch and chime I was looking for.
Etc.:
Somers is endorsed by Wyres Strings. For guages, I use .10-.56 on my PRS, .10-.52 on my Strat, and a light guage acoustic on my Martin.
JSB uses 1.0 mm picks from SteveClayton.com with a custom Somers logo.
I use a PedalTrain Pro pedalboard (with handy ATA flight case) with 20 foot Planet Waves cables and George L cables to connect my pedals to my PCP True Bypass Looper.
Our sound-guy, Evan, uses a Bayer Dynamic (kick) mic on my cab to capture the best mix of high and low end possible.
Somers use Shure PSM 200 in-ear monitors.
