Things are happening at a rapid pace, so fast that it is hard to keep up, but keep up we must. President Obama’s Stimulus package is disgorging huge amounts of money into our community to address a variety of problems. So far we have received $3.61 million for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, administered by the Unified Government Community Development department, intended to address the foreclosure properties. We also have been awarded $2 million for summer jobs for low-income youth 16 to 24 years of age administered by the Workforce Partnership. These are just the beginning of the funds that will come into Wyandotte County over the next year.
Here is where the problem lies, everyone is getting so excited by this influx of money that they are losing focus on what this money is intended to do. It is not intended to make the wealthy wealthier, it is not for pet projects that the power brokers want to fund, it is not for the social and charitable programs that have been funded over the years which have fallen short in creating sustainable self-sufficiency in the lives of their clients so that people don’t have the same level of need year after year. No, it is not for any of that.
Instead President Obama has said that it is time to teach a man to fish so that he can feed himself. It is time to challenge the old way of doing things and create the change we want to see in our lives.
How will we do this? Here are a few things we should do immediately (right now). There is an election on April 7th for the mayor, council positions, sheriff, school board and the BPU. We have got to turn out the vote like we did to elect Barack Obama. These people make the decisions the rest of us have to live with. The only way to make sure that these decisions benefit us is to vote people into these positions that recognize that we elected them, be accountable to us and know we will hold them accountable for the decisions they make. We ca
