Pepper the cat's Blurbs |
About me:
I adopted Pepper from an animal shelter on April 1, 2003. Before she arrived at the shelter, she was living on the streets, weighed 6 and half pounds, and had fleas. I chose her because she was very sweet and affectionate. She loved me petting her. Before I took her home from the shelter, the people working at the shelter told me she was sick but they didn't say what was wrong with her. I figured that they would put a seriously sick cat to sleep, so I thought Pepper just needed some medicine and she'd get better and that would be the end of it.
But when I took her to the vet, the doctor told me that Pepper had severe gum and teeth problems. Her gums were bloody and her teeth were rotting. She had to have a deep teeth cleaning and some teeth removed.
And that was just the beginning. Throughout the years, she's had 12 teeth removed. Every year I took her for a check up and teeth cleaning which usually required removal of some of her teeth.
Recently, I've had the biggest medical problem with her. On May 22, 2008 I noticed Pepper had a small wound on her back between her shoulder blades. I don't know how she got the wound. I just noticed it one day when I was petting her. The wound was about as wide as a pencil eraser head, and I was afraid that it would get infected, so I took her to her vet. The doctor "examined" the area and then prescribed an ointment and antibiotics. I put "examined" in quotes because I don't think the vet did a very thorough job of examining the area because that was the exact same area where her tumor was. I noticed that the area between her shoulder blades was usually large, but I figured it must've been swollen due the wound, and so I just believed what the doctor said.
On June 16, 2008, the wound had heeled by then but the lump on her back had gotten bigger and harder. I took her to her vet again. He said he thought it could be a tumor and he needed to take x-rays on Pepper. The x-rays confirmed that it was a tumor. I agreed to have them surgically remove the tumor. The vet hospital is always busy, so Pepper had to stay there for a few days. It was sad and lonely to not have her at home. On June 18, 2008 Pepper came home after surgery. She had her incision stitched up across her back, and there was a quarter size bruise on her side near her incision. But most importantly the lump was gone. (you can see the pictures of what Pepper looked like after surgery in my photo gallery.)
When Pepper was at home from the day of her surgery, I was petting her and I noticed that the IV needle was still in her front leg. I was really upset that the people at the vet clinic had left the IV needle in her leg. Her paw was very swollen (there are pictures of her swollen paw in the photo gallery). I called the vet hospital and told them that they left the IV needle in my cat's leg, and the guy who helped perform the operation said that I could bring her in 2-3 days and they'll remove it. I couldn't believe that they wanted my cat to have a needle in her for several days. I told him I want the needle removed as soon as possible. I drove over there, and they removed it and placed a bandage around it.
Ten days later, I noticed that the lump had grown back again. (there is a picture of it in the photo gallery) I couldn't believe it. I felt it, and it was lumpy and hard. The vet said he couldn't cut the entire tumor out because he could damage the spinal cord.
On August 1, 2008, my mom was cleaning the litter box and that there was blood. Pepper was urinating blood. The next day we took her to a new vet. (I didn't like the service from the last vet.) The new doctor knew what kind of tumor Pepper has, but he said there was nothing he could do for her. He gave me a referral to an oncologist. He also said that the urinating blood and tumor were probably not related. He took x-rays and performed tests on Pepper. So far nothing has been determined to why she's been urinating blood.
As for myself: I am a college student working part time. My mom got laid off from her job and due to a poor economy, she's having a hard time finding another job, so I have to help her out. I can't afford Pepper's medical bills and I need help. Pepper is a sweet, loving cat. I love her so much. I don't want to see her suffer and die.

Who I'd like to meet:
I would like to find people who care about animals and want to help animals when they're sick. My cat Pepper is sick and she needs medical help, but since I'm a college student working a part-time retail job and helping out my mom who got laid off, I can't afford Pepper's medical bills. I love my cat and I don't want her to die. I don't want her to suffer either. Any donation amount would be greatly appreciated. Social/emotional support for Pepper is also greatly welcomed so please post your comments about Pepper. Thank you all so much. Cash and checks only. If sending check, then please make the check payable to Joanne Will.
