MY LIFE IN BLACK AND WHITE
began as a solo project for Dylan Summers called Castaway. His charred voice and storytelling lyrics called out to brotherhood, hard times, and his travels. Ben Hedlund and Erik Nicholson joined Dylan on guitar and as The Castaways they developed a loyal fan base. With a few line up changes to match their new name, My Life In Black And White hit the Northwest with a beer in each hand. Filled out by Coty Landauer’s aggressive drumming, Andy Langridge’s quick country bass lines, and Andrew Wicker’s melodic guitar work these five rallied an Irish inspired punk rock sound.
Drawing on influences as broad a The Pogues, Merle Haggard, and Rancid, My Life In Black And White recorded their first full length with Handsome Jon Burbank(of I Can Lick Any SOB In The House) in Portland, Oregon. The 12 song album Cloudy Skies was released in 2005 on money earned from playing their form of Cow-Punk everywhere and anywhere it would be allowed. Such songs as “Coldground/Playground,” “Song Of The Sea,” and “Shackleton” have found regular rotation on Complete Control Radio throughout the country. The My Life guys traveled the Northwest inspiring sing-alongs and establishing themselves as Rock & Roll revivalists. “Deadman,” and its chorus that called out, “So Come And Drink With Me,” became the mantra that marked their energetic live shows and made everyone feel welcome.
After touring, drinking, and sharing the stage with many bands, My Life In Black And White came home to Portland and began recording again in the summer of 2006. This new batch of songs showed a road-tested maturity and brought their country roots to the forefront. Though offered several different routes for its release the band decided to stick with their DIY ethic and released the record themselves. Drawing from the radio attention “Cloudy Skies” garnered, their second full length, Bottles, Our Breakdowns has opened even more doors for My Life In Black And White. Released early in 2007, Bottles, Our Breakdowns was grabbed up by hundreds of fans who already new the words from their dedicated concert support.
Since the release of Bottles, Our Breakdowns, MY LIFE IN BLACK AND WHITE has toured nationally (playing more shows than most bands do in a year), and started writing their next full length. Never ones to go with the flow they have created their own scene with partners in crime SID & FANCY, THE RUBBERNECKERS, and AMADAN. Come to a show, have a beer, and join the family.
