Led by the mysterious Redboy, MLCD are a maelstrom of ambition, craft and cinematic scope. The musical universe includes fairy tale pop, with orchestral arrangements (more than 30 instruments on some songs) evoking Mercury Rev and Bernard Herrmann (Hitchcock's soundtracks), the haunted melodies of Arcade Fire and Nick Cave set amongst a “surreal, haunted cabaret” not far from Tom Waits or Flaming Lips, similar to Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. Several guest musicians took part in the project, including Jonathan Donahue of MERCURY REV, Ralph Mulder of ALAMO RACE TRACK and Pall Jenkins of BLACK HEART PROCESSION and 3 MILE PILOT.

At the same time, the band is working with 2 film directors (Bubble Duchesse) and a scenograph (Catherine Cosme) on a live performance of a kind of cool Opera Pop, with decor and 13 orignal video projections on phosphorescent skycrapers and 50's TV, a production that is neither too big nor too intimate, fit to clubs and festivals of the international rock scene.

After 2 years of writing and recording in several studios, the 13-song album was recorded during one year in Amsterdam with famous producer Frans Hagenaars (Bettie Serveert, Alamo Race Track,...) and mixed between Dallas, Texas and Europe by John Congleton (Grammy nominated producer of Modest Mouse, St Vincent Polyphonic Spree, The Roots, Black Moutain,...) Raphael Wyndands and John Roo, and mastered by Simon Davey at The Exchange London. ,

MLCD won 2 of the most important Octaves (Belgian Music Awards) in 2010: Best Artist & Best Album of the year. MLCD [My Little Cheap Dictaphone] nous offre avec « The Tragic Tale of A Genius » un concept-album et un spectacle ambitieux, sorte d' « Opéra Pop moderne » qui raconte le parcours tragique d'un artiste surdoué, mais torturé par ses démons intérieurs, perdu entre rêve et réalité (basé notamment sur la vie Brian Wilson).

Ce projet, porté par le charismatique Redboy, est l'aboutissement de plus de deux ans de travail d'écriture acharnée pour le groupe, et d'une année de studio méticuleux entre Belgique, Hollande et Etats-Unis, au coté de John Congleton (Grammy award nominated producer, Polyphonic Spree, Black Moutain, Explosions in the Sky, The Roots, Modest Mouse, St Vincent...).

L'univers musical lorgne vers de grandes chansons pop héroiques et féériques, avec des arrangements symphoniques à la Bernard Herrmann (Hitchcock) et Mercury Rev, des ballades hantées et possédées à la Nick Cave et Arcade Fire, le tout dans une atmosphère « cabaret surréaliste un peu déjantée » que ne renieraient ni Tom Waits, Flaming Lips, ou encore le Ziggy Stardust de Bowie.

Plusieurs chanteurs internationaux sont invités sur l'album : Jonathan Donahue de MERCURY REV, Ralph Mulder d'ALAMO RACE TRACK, et Pall Jenkins de BLACK HEART PROCESSION et 3MILE PILOT.

En parallèle, une véritable création de spectacle originale a été conçue par une véritable équipe de professionnels issus du cinéma et du théâtre sous la direction et les vidéos originales de Bubble Duchesse, et avec une scénographie de Catherine Cosme, mettant le tout en scène dans un univers habité, fort et dynamique, en privilégiant une mise en scène ni trop grandiloquente, ni trop intimiste, dans un décor années 50 en phosphorescent, des projections vidéos, et la présence occasionelle d'un orchestre classique.

L'enregistrement et le mixage de l'album ont eu lieu sur une période de plus de 9 mois, dans divers studios (dont le Sound Enterprise à Amsterdam et le Elmwood à Dallas, USA). L'album, composé de 13 titres, est produit par Frans Hagenaars (responsable du dernier album d'Alamo Race Track, mais aussi d'Evil Superstars, de Bettie Serveert, ...), mixé au Texas par John Congleton (Grammy award nominated producer, Polyphonic Spree, Black Moutain, Explosions in the Sky, The Roots, Modest Mouse) et Raphael Wynands (Studio 5), et masterisé à The Exchange à Londres.

Elu « Artiste de l'année » et « Album de l'année » aux Octaves de la Musique (Victoires de la Musique belge) et « Personnalité belge de l'année » par « Le Vif L'express et Focus » en 2010. La sortie de l'album en Janvier 2011 en Angleterre leur a déjà valu le titre d'ALBUM OF THE WEEK dans le très select SUNDAY TIMES, et 4 étoiles dans « Q », « Independent » et « Artocker »
