PAGE DRUMS endorser & dear friend, Andrew Light passed away at 5:30AM this morning, March 6,2009. Andy recently had surgery on the membrane around his heart (which was from a previous heart transplant) due to hardening of the membrane & not allowing the heart to function at its desired capacity. He was told going in that his chances of surviving the surgery were 50/50. He did survive in typical Andy fighting style. But for the past couple of weeks, Andy has endured many painful complications. He fought the fight as only Andrew Light could do, straight forward & headstrong all the way. Andy had been in that hospital so many times that he needed no nurses to tell him what he needed, Andy told them & was right! Always!
Andy Light was a drummer! He may have hung drywall for rent money, or painted a house, or put in a french door for someone but, Andrew Light lived to play the drums! Never have I met anyone who dealt w/the medical issues that Andy had to deal w/who possessed more passion for drumming. In fact, medical issues or not, Andrew had more zest for life & love of drumming than any person I have ever encountered. I had a badge for Andy to come to the NAMM convention this year. He, at the time, was basically wheelchair bound due to fluid buildup (complication of the membrane hardening). Andrew had always wanted to go to the NAMM show. I really did not think he could possibly do it. On Saturday of the show, I get a call-Andy saying he is outside. Now people, the NAMM convention is HUGE! Myself & PAGE endorser Steve Anderson walk out & Andy is sitting out front in his wheelchair, PAGE shirt on & ready to go. I asked, "Andy, where the heck did you park?" He said he parked down the street. I thought, "OK". As we entered the show I went upstairs to get his badge. When I came down & hung the badge around his neck he did what was typical of Andy. "Hey Jeff, man I really appreciate you getting me this badge, you don't need to hang out w/me. I know you've got business here, etc. etc." Andy always thinks of everyone else & never wants to burden anyone. I was like, "Andy, I was here yesterday. I've seen it. Now let's go". I had the best time wheeling Andy in & out of those aisles, watching his face as famous drummers walked by. At one point we were in, I think, the VIC FIRTH booth & my partner David pointed out drum great Jojo Mayer standing a few feet away talking w/fans. I knew that Andy really admired this guy & walked over & simply told Jojo that there was a drummer he needed to meet. As we walked over I briefly explained about "Big Andy" (as I always called him). Jojo was so cool w/Andy. Took pictures, talked w/him, everything. That ended up the highlight of NAMM for Andy. So if Jojo reads this, Andy & I thank you for being a true soul. Now this next paragraph really tells you about Andrew Light.
As we left the show, David Page, Andy & myself are outside & decided to go see another PAGE endorser, Kofi Baker who was playing a gig nearby. I told David that I would push Andy to his truck & ride w/him & we'd meet David at the show. I started pushing Andy and pushing Andy and pushing Andy. Finally asking just where he parked. Folks, Andrew Light (not in the greatest of health mind you) rolled himself probably close to 3/4 of a mile mostly UPHILL to go to NAMM! He crossed very busy crosswalks that were not wheelchair friendly, believe me. When I rolled him up to his truck I was winded & my feet were killing me. He made that distance w/his arms! And here's my point about Andy-he NEVER ONCE COMPLAINED!
I have many stories of Andy. When I made the decision to close down the retail drum store last summer, I had a lot of moving, chalking, painting to do before asking for my deposit back. Of everyone I knew, the only person that came down & offered to help me w/every aspect of moving was Andrew Light. The man who worked hard labor all day & felt pretty bad most of his life came & helped a friend & brought primer, paint, drywall, ladders, etc. w/him. If I tried to get him to relax & go home Andy just shot me his "Yeah ok Jeff, now, what do you want to do next?”
I was at the hospital last night among his many friends & family (loved ones). Andy's good friend John had kept me informed on his condition & had phoned me around 6:30PM & told me that I probably would need to come on to the hospital, that he did not look as if he would make it through the night. I saw my friend w/a respirator keeping him alive. His face & hands were moving involuntarily. Guess what were in his hands? A pair of drumsticks! He never dropped them. On his walls were cards from loved ones, a letter from PAGE endorser Kenn Youngar, urging his fellow drummer on, pictures of his friends & band mates, a copy of the article DRUM Magazine recently did on Andy for their online magazine. It was not hard to figure out this man's passion-drumming & people! I never knew how hard this would be for me. I know that I am selfish & that my friend is in a better place now. Last night a chaplain came by & prayed for Andy. He quickly said, "We can see that you're a drummer, maybe GOD needs a drummer in his Kingdom now!" Indeed, GOD just brought his drummer home. You're free of pain Big Andy. So until the day where we can have a drum battle together, you play your drums w/all your soul my friend. Your music & your rhythms will beat in our hearts forever.
I love you Big Andy!-Jeff

PAGE DRUMS endorser Andy Light has been hospitalized at Loma Linda Hospital. Most of you know of Andy's condition but for those who don't...Andy was born with Baby Blue Syndrome. He has had many medical issues all his life & when Andy was in his 30's, he underwent a heart transplant. For those who don't realize what this entails, Andy takes around 30 pills a day just to keep his body from rejecting the heart. He lives with constant pain. But one thing about Andy, he never complains, feels sorry for himself or asks for sympathy. All Andy wants to do is play drums in his band DROPJOY. DRUM Magazine recently did a small article on Andy in their online magazine.
http://www.drummagazine.com/features/post/drumming-to-a-drastically-new-beat-with-page-drums/
The membrane around Andy's heart has harden. This causes fluid build-up on his organs & caused the heart not to be able to expand at its normal capacity. Due to his medications, he cannot take immune builders & Andy is always very susceptible to all illnesses that most of us take lightly. A common cold can sideline Andy for months.
Andy's medical bills are astronomical & as you can imagine, his insurance plans don't begin to cover everything.
Andy Light is one of the most amazing people I have ever met. He is a caring man, one who always asks how everyone else is doing even when he can't walk. Drumming is his existence. He has literally played gigs in the past while hooked up to oxygen tanks.
Andy is currently in ICU. He just underwent heart surgery yesterday. His survival chances were 50/50. He seems to be doing well. Please send cards & remember him in your prayers. He is a great guy.

Andrew Jackson Light, DROPJOY Drummer endorsed by PAGE DRUMS!
DRUM MAGAZINE-NOVEMBER 2008 ISSUE:
"Drumming to a Drastically New Beat with Page Drums"
By Salman Haqqi
It’s 1984 and Andrew Light is watching in awe as his hero, Alex Van Halen, pounds those thunderous drums in true Alex fashion. 11 years later, Andy finds himself in Los Angeles playing with rock bands Lightning Floyd and Tequila Slam Dance. A thousand clubs and several California tours later, Floyd and Dance disbands and San Diego rocker, Nicky Walker invites Andy to be on her album “Her Sins”, which spun a single released on a compilation album with the likes of Ani D’Franco and the Indigo Girls. Andy’s story sounds typical of every kid who’s ever banged on pots and pans in their mother’s kitchen with one small exception. Andrew Light was diagnosed as a young child with Blue Baby Syndrome, Heart Disease, and a life expectancy of six months.
In 2001, Andy was informed that his heart was failing, he had blood clots in his left leg and he had to be put on the heart transplant list at Loma Linda Medical Center in Southern California. Most would find it difficult do anything hooked up top an oxygen tanks much less play drums on stage but Light did it until he simply couldn’t anymore and was hospitalized due to his heart working at around 12% capacity. Good news soon came that he had a donor for his heart but the news was short-lived when he found that the heart also came with lungs and a lady needed both. His new heart had to wait.
Not one to indulge in self-pity, Andy remained optimistic and miraculously, a week later, July 13, 2003, another heart was donated and Andrew had a successful heart transplant.
Only 10 days after his operation, Light was on a mission to get back behind the drums. Reuniting one year later with Walker, Andy and bassist Etienne deBruin formed Dropjoy. Albums and EP’s followed and Dropjoy’s latest endeavor, their EP “Hungry” produced by Light himself is to be released in October.
In the summer of 2008, Andrew signed an endorsement deal with Page Drums out of San Diego, making him the first heart transplant patient to ever receive a drum endorsement.
Jeffrey Hudson of Page Drums says of Andy; “What drew us to Andy wasn’t simply his medical condition or the fact that Andy is quite a great rock drummer… but his enthusiasm for the drums and for life.”
Andy takes massive amounts of pills just to keep his body from rejecting his heart, and endures most of his days in physical pain without any complaints. He is the most gracious, humble person and has thanked Page repeatedly for signing him. “We have been allowed to experience the amazing spirit of a man who truly knows the important things in life,” Hudson said.
In September, Andy was in the hospital due to water build-up around his major organs. Because of his heart condition and medications required, his immune system has weakened and even the slightest cold can cause problems. But, in true Andy spirit, he said he had to be out by the weekend… he had a gig to play!
