Your Music Magazine CD Review March 2008 Powerslave.com - 12 Galaxies Show Review January 23, 2007 "...My Monster rocked the hardest, hands down. I could feel the floorboards flexing under my feet as the remaining fans jumped to the crunch of each song...." [Read Full Story] Metro - Silicon Valley October 4 - 10, 2006 RIGHT TO THE GUT Raw power and a tight, intensive sound distinguish every My Monster show.
"ROCKING HARD with a two-front vocal and guitar attack, My Monster roars into the Blank tonight fresh out of the studio, where they were working on thier first full-length album, to hit the club circuit harder than ever. MC Shockey lays down blazing guitar licks beneath calm and melodious vocal work backed by the intensity of Statis Kuo on second guitar, the pulsing bass of Freak Monkey and the pounding serenity of Joey Guthrie on the kit. As far as local indie rockers go, My Monster kicks right to the gut, evoking a raw power and tight, intense sound that's a throwback to more subversive alternative and indie haydays."
-Ryan Osterbeck- CAbands.com - Show Review November 10, 2005 "My Monster was up first. Now, the last time I saw these indie rockers must've been on a bad night, as their last performance was rather lackluster. They more than made up for it this time around however, blasting through songs like "Put Your Arms Around Me" and "Set You Free" with reckless abandon. Frontman MC Shockey's guitar howled like a demon as he ripped through solo after solo, barely held in check by the chugging rhythms of second guitarist Statis Kuo and the pulsing bass lines pumped out by bass player Freak Monkey. The band recently recruited a new drummer, and it's rare to see a drummer play with such effortless intensity. His face is a mask of calm tranquility when he plays, almost as if he isn't really there. The twin vocal attack of Shockey and Statis is ethereal and almost eerie in its ambience at times, powerful and absolute at others. The band powered through song after song, unflagging in their intensity. The music carries with a rough intensity and an indie spirit that harkens back to the era of The Pixies, Fugazi, and The Clash. Rocking hard carries it's own pitfalls, however , such as when Statis broke a string early on in the set, and upon discovering the lack of strings OR a second guitar, played through the rest of the set with the same guitar, minus the string. An act to be commended, to be sure. Overall, the band gave a stellar performance. I can't wait to see them again." [Read Full Review] -Randall Hisle-
Take one hot Asian chick with a Gibson, add a quirky and eccentric singer/songwriter, sprinkle in a self-proclaimed freak, and just a dash of frazzled beats, and you have My Monster. With an eclectic blend of 80’s and 90’s rock styling and a sound often compared to The Pixies and Stone Temple Pilots, this San Jose four-piece has earned a reputation for rockin’ hard and often. With more than seven years together, My Monster has played every bar and club the South Bay has to offer, as well as toured up and down the west coast and as far east as Las Vegas. And as the band would say, “that’s not bad for a bunch of hacks!”
In 2007, My Monster released their first full-length album In Tune With the Voices in Your Head to enthusiastic reviews. The album showcases their trademark sound reminiscent of The Cure – a mix of spunky, catchy melodies and dark emotional lyrics. The first two rockin’ tracks, "Don’t Be Mean" and "PYAAM" are ripe for radio play, but listeners also appreciate the slowed down jams "Shy Like Me" and "Sickness." The polished album shows the complexity within My Monster while bringing their fans along on an irresistible musical journey.
But it’s not just the music or the lineup that sets this band apart. My Monster is truly at home on stage. From the first chunky riff to the final resonating crash, My Monster bursts onto the stage with an explosion of sweat, passion, and raw energy that creates a connection with their audiences, earning them new fans wherever they play.
In early 2009, original bassist Freak Monkey decided to move away, forcing him to leave the band. As much as he will be missed, the band recruited new bassist Andrew Gibson, who's debut show was in May 2009 at West Fest. My Monster is currently working on new material.
