Marty Magehee: Biography
With his previous group, 4Him, Marty Magehee has sold over 3.5 million albums worldwide, had 26 no.1 singles, won 9 Dove awards, and snagged a Grammy nomination; but that is far from the whole story. A multi-instrumentalist and man of great faith, Magehee is crafting a solo career in which he can lay his innermost feelings bare and provide comfort and peace to all like-minded music lovers.
His former foursome has definitely set a standard in Christian pop and, make no mistake, Magehee is grateful for the opportunities it brought him. Though he was a big part of 4Him’s signature sound, it’s definitely not an accurate portrayal of his full range of influences. I’ve been spending the past year or so dusting off the other parts of my musical heritage that I’d literally forgotten about, laughs Magehee. The rediscovery process has been amazing. I was so immersed in that particular season of my life that I’d honestly lost touch with the entirety of my musical self.
That musical self began with banjo pickin’ and guitar playing in his youth and went on to include a trumpet scholarship to college. Over time Magehee developed proficiencies in keyboard and eventually graduated from Evangel University with a B.A. in music, including a minor in piano.
He is currently producing other artists’ projects while ramping up the itineration of his own project, but even at this phase, his stylistic departure from 4Him is becoming clear. His personal and aggressively honest material has bite that he feels is missing from Christian music on the whole. This forceful vehicle for his message will confront the listener and enable them to sort through their troubles, as he does via this venting in song. We are all a work in progress, Magehee asserts. My song Drawing Me is all about that. I am laying it all out there through my music so I can figure it out as I go along in the world.
His song Secrets says that unless we are honest with ourselves and God we can not be truly pure or truly free. No conviction, no redemption, adds Magehee. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been wired with a sense of creative urgency to echo whatever God is trying to communicate at that particular time. I feel that he needs us to be honest with him and each other.
Marty Magehee’s music is powerful, encouraging and freeing. With his song Eyes Wide Open, a classic rocker that embraces his new direction with more melody and passion, he sends a message that embodies his entire story. We haven’t seen it all yet, he says. We live in such a sophisticated society, but we only see a part of things. Nor have we seen all that Marty Magehee is capable of. The future has limitless possibilities for this man of talent and faith.
