I behold in thee His Image.
In thee, my friend, I see God and through you I feel His presence.
I see in the hand that gives, His hand;
And in the voice that speaks of Love, I hear Him speak.
For His lines have gone out into all places,
And from the highest to the lowest, all, all partake of His nature.
"For He is all in all, over all and through all."
I perceive that God is in all people.
~Ernest Holmes
this is my little shrine tribute to john. although i was a child, or perhaps because i was a child, when john lennon was active as an artist & activist, John made a lasting impression on my creative life. i think of John Lennon, as the gandhi of my age -like a popular cultural Gandhi.
like gandhi, john's image has become synonymous with Peace.
people still feel a close kinship to the ideals, and ideas john lennon expressed for a generation that expected Peace & civility from their government.
after seeing THE US Vs. John Lennon, i came away with the impression that John was being used by anti-war activists in america. but, i think John wanted to lend his power of publicity to a very worthy cause he believed would save lives- ending war & giving Peace A Chance.
what i love about john, his music, his choices as an activist, is that he seemed to see through the b.s* in our culture, in media and entertainment culture, which has only become worse since his passing. his expression was direct & from the gut-that's powerful.
i love that john announced that he had found an equal in a woman, (this was revolutionary) and that he opened the door for bi-racial relationships by loving and marrying a woman with an asian heritage, during the still racist vietnam era in america, where people still used racial epitaphs to describe asian people, or people of any color or background that was not mainstream. even on tv, archie bunker was the norm, and women were expected to be housewives, though they were venturing into the work world out of necessity more than choice.
in this respect, and i think this has been overlooked, John was ahead of his time socially, he was an innovator, an agent of social change. the same can be said of Paul, George & Ringo. Perhaps that is part of the reason why their work together had such a dynamic impact on culture everywhere their music could be heard ?
i also ...Love... that john stayed home to raise his child, and left a career that could have allowed him egomania. when i first listened to songs like "Beautiful Boy" and "Watching the Wheels" and realized John had chosen to be one of the first stay-at-home dads, after the phenomenal success in public life he had enjoyed, or endured, my eyes were opened about men in general. some men love to be with their families. this was a revelation to me as i got older & saw how men's lives & roles were changing. the stereotypical absent/working dad was not every man's first choice!
i love the individual work of each of the Beatles so much more than their collective work. maybe its because i was born after the heyday of Beatlemania? their individual work expresses their personal and artistic growth as they matured in life. this another area in which the fabulously beloved boys became beacons of light for a generation - they expressed deep and meaningful feelings about life, love, marriage, children, fatherhood, spirituality, transcendence, worship, class issues in our culture, and war and peace -towering issues in any culture, deeply meaningful experiences in the human condition. these young men who sang about love, in a time of escalating war, and picked up the broken spirits of a nation who had just lost their most loved president to an assassination, were now men with public lives openly discussing life's most meaningful experiences in beautiful songs for all to hear, at a time when people had not yet begun to discuss personal feelings and opinions, religion or politics in public, or in private.
when i think of how john, in particular, grew as an artist & person after leaving the success of the Beatles, i am thankful that this man who had given so much artistically to so many, had a chance to live what would ultimately be the last ten years of his life -being truly fullfilled as a person, as a man, through mature relationships & fatherhood. if the Beatles had stayed together, maybe John would have missed that once in a lifetime, deep, loving, human experience? i love the beautiful photos of john & yoko, and their family, and like so many others, i love to hear the wonderful songs they wrote together that are so full of the beauty of family life. john's songs opened a new window for men to express deep feelings, and for the women who love them to see them in a new way.
i was 12 years old when i first heard john lennon sing 'Imagine'. it was 1980. the lyrics to imagine had been published in a sky background on a page in rolling stone. i took the page out of the magazine and put my new mantra on my white bedroom wall where i could see it, where it could anchor me to peaceful thoughts each day.
i had moved to the city and away from the closeted life of suburban and rural white families. i experienced the first wave of culture shock when i witnessed adult teachers deriding poorer students in a classroom, and white young friends warnings about racial separation.
my new friends and school mates were from every country and of everycolor and shade of skin. i felt connected and enriched by new eyes and new experiences in my pre-teen world. i also felt confused and hurt realizing the separations of people from each other, and from universal love in the adult world. a man that i had never met, an artist, a peace activist, john lennon, provided me with the antidote to racism, culturism, sexism, genderism, poorism, and every kind of separation that wounds and hurts humanity.
a twelve year old girl, a song, and the world. my mind woke up to consciousness. to peace consciousness. the dream of peace was born in me. that is the very important role of artists in our culture. through the power of self examination and expression an artist changes the thought process of a nation. an artist has the power and very special gift of interrupting archaic thought processes like love and war, and inserting a new response for human beings to focus on. that is the power of a song. a song focuses the mind, the vibration and thought energy of a being on a concept and a process. when i heard john lennon sing Imagine, i knew there were other peace loving people out there like me who longed for unity and love for all people.
then, a shot rang out in december. i had just become awake. i was just a child. how could someone even think of taking the life of such a beautiful artist who spoke for something as good as Peace? i remember feeling crushed & crying like so many others who never knew john, for yoko ono & their children, and for john lennon, and for what we lost as a nation~ a visionary. he had so much to live for and so much to offer the world. he was a man with a vision of peace that the world needed, and still needs today. i learned recently that it was yoko ono's writing about surviving war that inspired john to write imagine. it makes me love Imagine more.
what a great gift john & yoko have given us. as artists using the power of reflection and thought, and inner examination and self revelation, using their own lives as a canvass, they showed us how to publicly and collectively imagine peace. may we be the peace & the love that we wish to see in the world. may all artists become awake to the power of their work to inspire hope in young people and joy in all humanity.

"We met, before the world began, when you had your original face",we met when you were just a sparkle in the universe's eye, when you were thinking outside the box, going with the flow, loving life, living off the grid, your energy was expanding,** we met when you were realizing life is the just the story and love's the lesson, you were speaking the universal language, transcending awareness. we met when you were awake, you were up at the dawn of the millenium, making coffee, cooking breakfast, soluting the sun, feeding the hungry, raising the children, housing the people, teaching love, exercising compassion, forgiving your self, loving your brother, and respecting generations past, you were feeling your connection to the universe, trusting all creation, you were letting go, and letting god, you were taking one day at a time, you were accepting failure, and giving grace, you were realizing that gratitude isn't just an attitude, its a way of living.
we got it together, bought "a ticket to ride" "on the peace train", we sang "get up stand up" we were "jamming in the name of the lord". together we joined creation to release all the beautiful beings from needless suffering. we were nothing new under the sun, we were Love & stardust,we were stars gone nova.
