SOME WORDS ABOUT "SOULROC" ...

Since early 2007, "Soulroc" has marked the beginning of a very personal musical journey. Bavarian singer, bass player and guitarist Peter Bauernfeind (born in 1969) finally decided to go his own musical path. The impetus for his decision was a really sad one: the tragic death of his elder brother led him to intense soul-searching. So much pain, grief and family matters had to be understood and handled. Suddenly it was clear to see: Peter had to put all these emotions and thoughts into music. Into his own and intimate songs – soul songs! Soulroc was born: heartfelt lyrics wrapped into soulful rock- or sometimes jazz-style pop tunes.

SOULROC - THE SOLO-PROJECT

It all began with amateur 8-track recordings. By now Peter’s played every instrument on the Soulroc tracks and done all the vocals. So – once songwriting was started – more and more songs came from the bottom of his soul. The first demo cd was called "The long lost songs" and was finished in June 2007. Ten songs – not really well-produced ones – have found many friends and demonstrated the pathbreaking songwriting potential of Soulroc. Surprisingly enough, the songs aroused public interest at music websites such as www.mp3.de and some web radio stations.

About three months later, the second self-produced album was released: "Popmusik2.0". It featured 13 new songs, which Peter presented at POPKOMM Berlin, Germany's biggest music trade show. Unfortunately, no one there seemed to have an open ear for Soulroc. It was plain to see afterwards that this was not just a try, but also an illusion. The songs were still badly produced, arrangements still too simple and - to be honest – what record label should be keen on the imperfect musical works of a completely unknown but talented man in his late thirties? However, none of the countless rejections by record labels, producers and publishers could not and still cannot lessen the commitment and productivity of this full-blooded musician. Even severe criticism is absorbed and every single piece of good advice is directly turned into better songs.

The end of 2007 brought a big surprise to Soulroc: Germany’s biggest radio station, "Bayern 3", played "Portrait of love" during its weekly "Newcomer show". In the meantime, three other Soulroc songs had been named "song of the day" at www.mp3.de. In November 2008, Soulroc reached number two in the "Bandcontest 2008" of web radio station newcomerradio.com.

With 2008, a new era of recording has begun. Peter started recording with LOGIC and his MacBook. Still alone at home — but this time with more possibilities, better sounds, more sophisticated arrangements and with ever-growing songwriting skills. Recently there have been more than 45 Soulroc tracks: enough material to fill more than three albums ... and more than enough to be played on stage!

SOULROC-THE LIVE-BAND

This is the third phase of Soulroc: since September 2008, it has grown from a solo project to an ass-kicking live band! Being somewhat unusual in pop music, Soulroc takes off as a "PopRockJazz" three piece band. Peter (vox/guitars) is excellently supported by Stephan Plecher (double bass/piano), and Max Breu on the drums. It seems a fortunate coincidence that these two young musicians are rooted in jazz and funk music. But it isn't. It has always been Peter's wish to meet virtuoso musicians with a wide musical background and a broadened horizon.

On November 15th, 2008, three-piece band Soulroc played its first live concert — after a mere five weeks of rehearsal! More than 170 people were well entertained and thrilled by the powerful mixture of pop, rock and jazz music. One very special moment was "Beauty of a wounded soul" — Soulroc's song about Africa — which was supported live on stage by Senegalese djembe player Cheikh Mboub.

What's up next with that Soulroc thing? Rehearsals for the 2009 concerts are currently underway. In addition, the three guys are preparing for their first professional album recordings in 2009. So watch this space!

EIN PAAR WORTE ÜBER "SOULROC" ...

Soulroc – das ist seit Anfang 2007 der Beginn einer sehr persönlichen musikalischen Reise. Denn zu eben dieser Zeit beschloss der Gitarrist, Bassist und Sänger Peter Bauernfeind (Jahrgang 1969) aus dem kleinen Städtchen Cham im Bayerischen Wald, endlich eigene musikalische Wege zu gehen. Die Initialzündung dazu gab ein sehr trauriges Ereignis. Der tragische Verlust des älteren Bruders stellte vieles in Frage. Trauer, Emotionen und familiäre Zusammenhänge wollten verstanden und verarbeitet werden. Und so kam der Entschluss, das alles in Musik zu packen – in die eigene Musik! Seelen-Musik. Soulroc war geboren. Tiefgründige, sehr persönliche Texte verpackt in soulige, rockige und manchmal jazzige Popklänge.

SOULROC - DAS SOLOPROJEKT

Zuerst begann alles mit ersten amateurhaften Aufnahmen per 8-Spur-Rekorder. Peter Bauernfeind spielt bis heute alle Instrumente selbst ein und übernimmt alle Gesangsparts. Ein Song folgte dem anderen, die Ideen für Musik und Texte schienen nur so hervorzusprudeln. Im Juni 2007 war das erste Demoalbum "The long lost songs" fertig. Zehn eigene Stücke, zwar schlecht produziert, aber schon sehr beachtet und mit wegweisendem Songpotential. Erste Erfolge und überraschend großes Interesse bei Internetportalen wie www.mp3.de und diversen Webradios machten Mut und Lust auf mehr.

Kaum 3 Monate später war das zweite Album "Popmusik2.0" pünktlich zur Berliner Popkomm fertig. Die 13 Tracks, immer noch komplett selbstproduziert, fanden auf den Ständen der Berliner Messe allerdings keinerlei Anklang. Im Nachhinein betrachtet wäre alles andere auch reine Illusion gewesen. Erstens waren die Songs immer noch zu schlecht produziert, die Arrangements noch zu rudimentär und - ehrlich gesagt - welches Label reißt sich schon um die musikalischen Werke eines komplett unbekannten Enddreißigers? Eben. Aber auch unzählige Absagen von Labels, Verlagen und Produzenten können weder Engagement noch Produktivität des Herzblutmusikers stoppen. Jede Kritik - und sei sie noch so hart - wird aufgesogen und jeder sinnvolle Verbesserungsvorschlag wird umgesetzt.

Nach der Popkomm 2007 der erste größere Erfolg: Bayern 3 spielt den Song "Portrait of Love" in der Newcomershow als "Bayerndemo der Woche". Auf MP3.de waren zwischenzeitlich schon drei Soulroc-Titel "Song des Tages". Ganz aktuell: Beim Bandcontest 2008 des newcomerradio.com belegte Soulroc im November den 2. Platz in der Kategorie Pop.

Anfang 2008 beginnt nebenbei eine neue Phase: Peter Bauernfeind steigt auf Recording per MacBook und LOGIC um. Verbesserte Sounds, ausgefeiltere Arrangements und deutlich wachsende Songwriting-Skills bringen immer mehr und bessere Songs hervor. Mittlerweile gibt es über 45 Soulroc-Titel! Genug für 3 Alben … und mehr als genug für die Bühne.

SOULROC - DIE LIVEBAND

Damit startet die dritte Phase von Soulroc: Seit September 2008 ist Soulroc kein reines Soloprojekt mehr, sondern auch eine astreine Liveband. In - für Popmusik etwas ungewohnter - Besetzung geht Soulroc als "PopRockJazzTrio" an den Start. Peter Bauernfeind an Gitarre und Vocals wird exzellent unterstützt von Stephan Plecher am Kontrabass (und am Klavier) und von Max Breu am Schlagzeug. Kein Zufall, dass die beiden jungen Musiker ihre Wurzeln im Jazz und Funk haben. Von Anfang an war es Ziel des Projektgründers, seine Songs mit Musikern umzusetzen, die über Virtuosität und musikalischen Horizont verfügen. Deshalb kann es als Glücksfall bezeichnet werden, dass so enorm talentierte und versierte Instrumentalisten den Weg zu Soulroc gefunden haben.

Das erste Trio-Konzert fand am 15. November 2008 nach nur 5 Wochen Proben statt. Vor über 170 Zuschauern im Rahmen des "Africa in Concert" Events begeisterte das Soulroc-Trio mit einer gelungenen Mischung aus Pop, Rock, Soul und Jazz. Eines der Highlights war definitiv der Abschluss-Song "Beauty of a wounded soul" - ein Song über Afrika, bei dem der senegalesische Percussion-Profi Cheikh Mboub das Trio mit feurigen Djembe-Rhythmen flankierte.

Nun geht es weiter mit Proben für Live-Konzerte und nebenbei bereitet sich das Soulroc-Trio darauf vor, in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2009 eine gemeinsame CD-Produktion zu starten. Eine Auswahl der besten Soulroc-Songs wird dann in neu arrangierten Versionen in Trio-Besetzung professionell produziert. Man darf gespannt sein.
