Définition
La musique disco est le résultat d'un mélange de funk, de soul et de pop, enrichi par de nouveaux instruments, les synthétiseurs. La musique disco est caractérisée par un danse binaire de tempo assez rapide (autour de 120 battements par minute), les pulsations étant marquées par la grosse caisse sur chaque temps de la mesure 4/4. Très souvent les contretemps sont soulignés par le piano. A l'origine, le disco se joue principalement dans les discothèques.

Au début des années 1970, dans les discothèques de Brooklyn, du Bronx ou de Harlem, les disc-jockeys sélectionnent des chansons soul ou funk peu connues pour leur capacité à faire danser le public. Il remixent parfois certains titres en studio, pour faire ressortir la batterie et la basse et mieux rythmer la danse; c'est le disco mix. La majorité des titres disco restent ainsi expérimentaux. Il s'agit en plus de trouver le bon tempo, la phrase de guitare qui va attraper l'oreille, d'habiller le rythme dansant de cordes ou de voix, d'allonger la durée des morceaux, d'accrocher l'oreille et le pas de danse par un motif cyclique. Le disco est né d'une stylisation du son de Philadelphie adaptée au marché blanc (les trois-quarts du marché aux États-Unis). A New York et à Miami, c'est grâce aux discothèques et aux radios que le disco démarre et triomphe. Cet immense succès fera d'ailleurs de l'année 1978 l'année où tous les records en matière de vente de disques ont été battus. A cette époque, les discothèques s'intègrent dans un mode de vie, qui se généralisera par la suite à toutes les couches de la société.
Le succès du disco est tel que, très vite, des chanteuses et des chanteurs de soul déjà bien installés s'y essayent, bientôt suivis de nouveaux arrivants. À la fin des années 1970, presque tous les interprètes de soul se sont mis au disco et certains arrivent à combiner les deux styles sans perdre leur identité. C'est dans tous les cas une fusion qui ne manque ni d'intérêt ni de personnalité, particulièrement chez Philadelphia International Records, la maison de disques qui, en enracinant le disco dans le R&B, est celle par laquelle tout a commencé. L'autre label de disques qui a peut-être le mieux réussi cette fusion est la Motown, malgré un succès guère plus qu'épisodique, au gré des stars et des disques.
