| General | The NAACP, founded in New York in 1909 and headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland is a 501(c) 3 entity comprised of seven regions representing 49 states, 5 countries and the District of Columbia. The National Office has responsibility for providing guidance to NAACP regional offices, state conferences and local units by supporting them in their efforts to carry out the initiatives of the Association at the grassroots level.
The NAACP 64-member Board of Directors meets four times per year to conduct the business of the Association. The Board sets policies focused on moving the Association forward as it relates to advocacy, litigation, social and criminal justice issues, economic development and youth outreach.
The NAACP has been leading the effort for social justice for nearly 100 years. Anyone who supports the mission of the NAACP irrespective of race, religion, political affiliation and ideology can become a member of the Association. The Association is comprised of thousands of Units and tens of thousands of members and volunteers nationwide. Unyielding in our purpose, the NAACP ensures the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens through democratic processes.
The NAACP Regional Offices are located in California, New York, Michigan, Missouri, Georgia, Texas, and Maryland. Each regional office serves as a mentor to states in that region. They provide guidance with regard to the Association's policy, procedure and civil rights agenda. Every local Unit chartered in a particular state works closely with the State Conference arm of the NAACP. The NAACP units can be found in any of the seven regions, each with a staff of volunteers to address the needs of the community and the membership. Currently, there are approximately 1,600 adult branches and 600 youth and college chapters. |

MISSION
The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
VISION
The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination.
OBJECTIVES
- To ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens
- To achieve equality of rights and eliminate race prejudice among the citizens of the United States
- To remove all barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes
- To seek enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights
- To inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek its elimination
- To educate persons as to their constitutional rights and to take all lawful action to secure the exercise thereof, and to take any other lawful action in furtherance of these objectives, consistent with the NAACP’s Articles of Incorporation and this Constitution.
