About me:

What is a vegan?
A vegan describes a person who lives a vegan lifestyle. Veganism is the embodiment of the philosophy of animal liberation. It is the practical application of the belief in animal rights. In more tangible terms, a vegan does not eat, wear, or consume any product that came from an animal or caused an animal to be exploited or killed (i.e. meat, dairy, eggs, fur, wool, leather, animal tested products, etc.). Veganism stems from the belief that, like us, animals have their own lives, their own bodies, and they deserve to be free to live on their own terms, without human interference. That is the ideal of animal liberation and what it means to be vegan.

What is a vegetarian?
A vegetarian is someone who only eats plant based foods - a herbivore. Vegetarianism is a diet. People may be vegetarian for the health benefits, to be more green (to reduce their ecological footprint), to free up more grain and thus help end word hunger, because they don’t like the taste of animal products, or because they do not believe in the killing of or cruelty to animals. The reasons someone is vegetarian might also be part of why they are vegan. A true vegetarian does not eat any animal products. When most people say vegan in reference to their diet, they really mean vegetarian. In simplistic terms, a vegetarian is a dietary vegan.

What is a locto-ovo vegetarian?
A lacto-ovo vegetarian is not really a vegetarian; it is a term used to define what most people think of as vegetarian, someone who eats no meat but still eats dairy and eggs. People are laco-ovo vegetarian for the same reasons people are vegetarian, but because eating eggs and dairy lead to all the same problems as eating meat [animals being exploited and killed, environmental destruction, waste of grains, ill-health] there really is no logical reason be a lacto-ovo vegetarian and not a true vegetarian.

MEET YOUR MEAT
[You might need to use Internet Explorer to view this video on MySpace. If you are using Firefox click here to watch the video.]

Much of this video was filmed at a small family slaughterhouse. Everything shown in Meet Your Meat is standard agricultural practice. Some is even better that the standard in many countries. There are no isolated cases in the Meet Your Meat video. The reason these atrocities persists is, in part, because people refuse to believe it. The cruelty and killing will not stop unless we stop supporting it. Commercial meat, egg, and dairy production are done for profit, just like any other business, so as long as a practice increases profits, it will be done, regardless of the impact on the animals. You can try to deny what goes on or justify supporting it--or believe that you are not supporting it--but the reality is that eating meat, eggs, and dairy does support what you see in the video.
