Durham, NC might not be the first place you think of when you think of timeless, heartfelt Americana songwriting but it is the place that Mystery Road calls home. The band, comprising of singer/songwriter/guitarist Don de Leaumont, Bassist Ira Otis Poplar-Jeffers, former Shades of Winter band mate, cellist Elana Scheiner and drummer Michael Cell are four kin souls who found each other with a common thread: to make great, fun and meaningful music that will someday, hopefully, be as timeless as the music that inspires them.
Inspired by artists such as Neil Young, The Band and The Grateful Dead, Mystery Road is set out to make the best, most honest and meaningful music that they can make and to deliver it with passion, fun and sincerity. Mystery Road’s songs touch upon every day living, love and even the conflicts between human beings and nature. These songs are not hard to grasp nor do they go over people’s heads. Mystery Road plays to the people, not at or above them.
Mystery Road is a group of friends, family if you will, who have joined together to offer their songs to any and everybody who will turn an open mind and ear to. There are no expectations or delusions of grandeur; just a need and a desire to open the minds and ears of people willing to hear their stories, sing along with the songs and join them on this journey. Just where is this journey going to lead? That, my friends, is a mystery.
Good travels to you always, Don, as you turn down the path of another Mystery Road. Here's a sample from my long-overdue gift to you, Elana, Ira, and Michael.
Hey Guys, We had so much fun last night with you guys too! (as always) Cant wait until we put together our next one. Thanks for the photos. Oh, and I love the group shot on your page. Hope to see you soon B&A
Escapin' through the lily fields I came across an empty space. It trembled and exploded Left a truck stop in its place. The truck came by and I got on That's when it all began. There was cowboy Don at the wheel on a truck to never-ever land!!
You guys were great, I only wish I had gotten to hear more! I was lucky to see your lovely cellist when she checked my eyes a couple weeks before the show, so I knew I would have to come see you play no matter what. Also lucky to have a kind soul to cover my Sunday yoga class :). Congratulations to the nearly newlyweds and I can't wait to see you all perform again in the future :)
You WERE in the zone, for sure! I caught the filet, the middle 6 songs I think. Half of the time when I wasn't shooting photos (in MY zone), I was busy noticing HOW PACKED Open Eye was for your show, and HOW MANY musician friends were there! Word's out: not only do you have great songs and a great band, but, uhhh, you're Mr. Nice Guy. We all love you.
Hey Don, Happy early Birthday! Hope you have a good one and maybe we will see you tomorrow. Not sure yet when we are playing hopefully earlier in the line up. See you soon B&A
AAAhhh. I'm a ninja at keeping my birthday secret! Loved meeting all y'all too. And Elana is hands down the coolest rockstar I know! Can't wait to see you guys play again!!
Oh, don Don, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. There are three fresh ones: 1. Peace Train - ahh, I miss my Cat Stevens 8-tracks. 2. Last night's stellar show. Throw in some big bonus points for that; we all had a blast last night, launched by Mystery Road!!! 3. The grateful living thanks you for The Grateful Dead primer. It wouldn't play in my car for some reason, but on my 'puter, pure sweetness. THIRTEEN-track sweetness, mind you! I'm not sure of the total body of GD, but this must be the cream, because each one of the selections is so fine.
