About Sophie
Sophie was born on 20th April 1994 to a Maltese father and English mother. She has one elder sister. At the age of 8 sang her first song in public and her parents realized straight away that Sophie had caught the bug! Things then progressed rapidly.
In 2004 she was lucky enough to be one of the 40 artists selected to perform for the Welcome EU Celebrations and she was also tasted TV success for the first time when she was chosen to become the resident artist on the TV series Fit Tajjeb u il Hazin’ on TVM. The TV series Kalamita followed. In 2005, Sophie was selected as the Goodwill Ambassador at the annual charity festival Heart of Gold and got to sing with a 9 piece live band to a 4000 capacity sell out crowd, and she was the youngest artist invited to sing before Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, at The CHOGM Malta.
In September 2006, Sophie’s own composition Extra Cute, won the Junior Eurovision Malta Final and she was hugely honoured to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest Final, that year in Romania. In 2007 Sophie participated in the Live Earth Malta Festival and she was thrilled to become the resident guest artist on TVM’s Hadd Ghalik playing to an estimated 80,000 viewers every Sunday.
In 2008, Sophie featured in the Maltese summer entertainment Showbiz High. This would prove to be the ultimate test to her multiple talents, as she choreographed major parts of the show, sang songs and even found time to write the lyrics to the title song. Later that year the entire cast was invited to London, to play 2 very special performances: These were the UK Malta Day Celebrations at Westminster Cathedral Hall and at Young Performers UK at the Shaftesbury Theatre, in London’s West End. Both performances received standing ovations from packed audiences. In November Sophie’s father discovered that a British Record Label was affecting a global search for a talented singer/songwriter who they wanted to develop and eventually launch. So her dad sent in a promotional video of Sophie. In the meantime Sophie ended the year scoring a huge personal success playing Sharpay Evans onstage in the Maltese production of Disney’s High School Musical.
In early January 2009 Sophie’s dad received news from British indie record label f2f Music Limited, that she had been shortlisted to the final 3 people from thousands of applications they had received, as a result of their global search for a talented singer songwriter. Then in late January Sophie’s dad was invited to travel to London to meet Graham Mulvein, Managing Director at f2f Music Limited. The record company had made their choice. They signed Sophie to a 3 year recording, publishing, management deal.
Sophie was thrilled to be given this golden opportunity, as this is what she had always been dreaming of. Immediately after this, Sophie teamed up with Maltese producer, Elton Zarb to work and create her debut single ‘The Clapping Song’, a cover of the 1960s Shirley Ellis classic. In the meantime f2f Music flew Sophie to London for an exclusive photoshoot with leading rock n roll photographer Sam Seager. This was an amazing experience for her and it gave her a massive boost of confidence.
On the 9th April 2009, The British High Commissioner to Malta, hosted a VIP reception in her magnificent residence, to celebrate Sophie’s official signing to f2f Music. Various influential personalities attended the reception.
In May 2009 Sophie’s version of ‘The Clapping Song’ was doing amazingly well in Malta and the single took The Maltese Islands by storm. It hit the Malta radio charts and managed to spend a record 3 weeks at number 1 on ‘The Malta People’s Music Chart’. This brought a wave of appearances by Sophie on Radio and TV.
All of Malta was talking about was Sophie and she was invited to be the Special Guest star and perform at the ‘Hannah Montana Movie Premiere’.
Sophie also guest starred earlier this year at The Diet Coke Malta Fashion Awards, performing live in front of 5000 fans and an estimated TV audience of 1.5 billion people, and at the Melita Malta Football Awards.
Her fan base continues to grow and her web site www.totallysophie.com is now getting approximately 47,000 hits per day.
On the 8th June 2009 ‘The Clapping Song’ was released in the UK and on mainland Europe. The result was is that it is currently being playlisted in the UK, Monaco, Spain, Greece and Cyprus.
The journey continues for Sophie. On 6th July she officially releases her second single ‘K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid)’, a single co-written by Sophie and her producer, Elton Zarb.
The single will be launched with a unique Roadshow where in 1 day, Sophie will visit every corner of Malta on top of an open-air double-decker bus, accompanied by her fabulous dancers and her friends. During this ‘Roadshow’ Sophie will be collecting funds for a Maltese Children’s Charity wherever she visits.
Sophie is very generously sponsored by the Island Hotels Group, Coca-Cola and Air Malta.
