NAAP-Los Angeles

Formed in Feb 2006, the Los Angeles chapter of the Network of Arab-American Professionals (NAAP-LA)has aimed to build an active circle of educated and successful Arab-Americans in the Los Angeles Area. NAAP-LA is devoted to upholding the NAAP mission of empowering the Arab-American community and has developed a socially responsible Arab-American community, bringing attention within the Arabic community as well as to the broader American society. Through the efforts of its devoted members, NAAP-Los Angeles has managed to build a highly respected, deeply motivated and dynamic organization with a vibrant, contemporary outlook on the problems and promise of our Arab-American community here in the United States.

Organization

NAAP is committed to a non-hierarchal, bottom-up governing principle in order to fully leverage the combined resources of all members and to equally share ownership of our collective efforts and achievements. Uniquely, this is an organization led by the members. NAAP-LA functions through various committees to develop and execute programs and initiatives, each of which is tasked with specific and well-defined objectives that are in agreement with NAAP's overall mission statement. Any member of NAAP-LA is welcome to join one or more Committees. Each Committee has a volunteer facilitator. The facilitator is responsible for ensuring that the Committee remains active and keep other committees and all members informed of their planned activities. NAAP is a 100% volunteer based organization, so your energy and passion is needed to maintain the level of events and initiatives NAAP-LA undertakes.

Committees

What are NAAP-LA Committees? To ensure the continued growth and strength of NAAP-LA, it is crucial that the talents and energies of all our members are leveraged to help develop and execute NAAP programs and events. These initiatives are organized within multiple NAAP-LA Committees; each with specific goals and objectives. Much of the project planning and discussions are carried out in the following two Committee forums: Committee email discussion - Each Committee has an email discussion group (listserv) for the purpose of proposing projects and planning the details of NAAP-LA events. Committee meetings - This is the opportunity to discuss prior, present or future events and is the forum where most of NAAP-LA's decisions are made. If you are interested in taking a more active role in the planning of NAAP-LA events, the first step is to join a Committee email discussion group (listserv) and let your opinions and ideas be known.

About me:
Our History...

In December 1996, a group of students in the Washington, DC area decided that it was time Arab-American students across the country join together to form a national network of Arab Student Associations (ASAs). This network, they envisioned, would strengthen already established organizations while providing support for emerging university associations. As a union, ASAs would share resources and information to strengthen their capacity as educational, cultural, and political groups in their respective communities.

Today, this vision is well under way. In its first two years, a solid base was formed in the DC area while introducing the idea of a national union to associations across the country. The concept caught on quickly and after just two years, in January 2000, the Union of Arab Student Associations (UASA) put on its first national conference. The program included speakers, workshops, and networking opportunities for students to share ideas and gain further insight into the potential successes and challenges that would lie ahead in promoting an Arab-American agenda. One year later, in January 2001, numbers more than doubled when students from over 20 states across the country attended the UASA conference. It became apparent that "going national" was not only a good idea, but a must if Arab-Americans were truly to make a long-term impact on American society-both culturally and politically.

It was at this milestone that the founders of UASA, now older, decided it was time to form the Union's sister organization. While the new organization would support student efforts, it would also be a channel through which alumni and professionals could step up their activism and focus their activities to reflect the experiences, needs, and resources of an older, more established working base of members.

This is that new organization. Welcome to NAAP.

I believe that you are contributors to this new civilization.
I believe that you have inherited from your forefathers an ancient dream,
a song,
a prophecy,
which you can proudly lay as a gift of gratitude upon the lap of America."
