Band Members

Nabarlek Individual Band member bio’s.

Ross Guymala – Traditional singer and backup singer. Ross is the quiet force and authority behind Nabarlek, as the senior member of the band it is Ross’s responsibility to ensure the band present their songs in a way that would be approved of by their elders and the broader Bininj (Aboriginal) Community.

Terrah Guymala – Lead singer and spokesperson for the band. Terrah is the driving force behind the bands desire to be a part of the Australian contemporary music industry. Terrah’s vision is to create artistic and economic opportunities through music for the band, their families and their community.

Winston Naborlhborlh –Lead singer and backup singer, Winston’s vocal style enhances the bands depth, he is always looking for new direction and new influences and provides the band with a third musical focal point.

Leon Guymala – Keyboards. Leon is Nabarlek’s musical director putting new arrangements and ideas forward to songs that are thousands of years old, through the bands pro tools system which is situated in the heart of Arnhemland leon is able to make ancient songs sound like they were written only yesterday.

Benjamin Buranali – Drummer. Benjamin is a natural drummer he has a hardhitting exciting style that often attracts glowing comments from other musicians. He learn’t from playing on upturned flour drums like most of the drummers from remote Aboriginal communities.

Rodney Naborlhborlh – Rhythm Guitar. Rodney’s reliable faultless playing is a reflection of the bands overall ethos of commitment and dedication to the musical task at hand. Always the quiet achiever Rodney takes great pleasure in performing and loves nothing more than being on the road.

Berribob Watson – Margot (Didgeridoo). The didgeridoo in western Arnhemland is called the margot and Berribob takes great pride in being Nabarlek’s margot player. Another quiet achiever Berribob has the ability to instantly engage you with a smile. Everywhere he goes he instantly makes friends.

Marshall Bangarr - Bass. Marshal is the musical workhorse of the band, he is highly regarded as a bass player and is thought of by some as probably one of the best bass players in northern Australia. Behind this quiet musician is a thoughtful and considerate musician who lays the foundation for Nabarlek.

Stuart Guymala – Lead Guitar. Stuart is legendary for his hunting skills, his love of the quiet life in central Arnhemland and his sometimes Jimi Hendrix style performances with the guitar. When asked “Where are you from?” he will mostly answer “from the bush”.

REQUEST Nabarlek's Brown Bird on Triple J

Manmoyi Radio is Nabarlek's 3rd studio release, recorded at Nabarlek's solar-powered homeland of 60 people in Western Arnhemland's rock country. It contains mainly original songs, based on VERY old traditional stories, and a cover of the Men At Work classic "Down Under". Nabarlek are highly influenced by the sounds of the Eighties but combine this influence with synths and fuzz-rock keyboards. Manmoyi Radio starts and ends with a 2-way radio dialogue of Kunwinj'ku speakers communicating with each other through the bush celebrating their life in remote Australia.

"Manmoyi Radio" will be officially launched at the 2007 Darwin Festival Starshell.

Nabarlek's gig in Carins 19th April 2007 reviewed here!....

For 8 years Nabarlek have worked at arriving at the release of "Manmoyi Radio". The two previous studio albums released by the band have been development projects the band has used them to work out what the music industry is about, to understand what the recording process requires, and to see how their songs translate to a broader audience. "Manmoyi Radio" is really their debut album it is their first real attempt to enter the broader music industry, after 8 years the band have picked up considerable knowledge about music and recording and about what they want from an album. "Manmoyi Radio" is a true reflection of who the band are. The diversity of songs shows a band that is not only a rock band but a band that is capable of beautiful gentle gospel influenced ballads.

There is almost something for everyone on this album, it stands as one of the most important Indigenous rock albums yet released in Australia, it is a testament to a band that has worked hard over the last eight years, worked towards their debut album which just happens to be the third studio album released.

The Garage Band That Never Had A Garage have plenty of commitment to their music and the staying power needed to be a part of the broader Australian Music Industry.

A new wave of Indigenous music based on the traditional stories and songs of the worlds’ oldest living culture is emerging from Arnhem Land. This exciting new development in Australian music reflects the strong traditional beliefs and customs of Australia’s Indigenous people but is performed in a modern arrangement and almost always sung in the “true” languages of Australia, the languages of its Indigenous people. It is a style that is influenced by rock, reggae, country and gospel, a style known as Indigenous Roots music.

Nabarlek are at the forefront of this musical revolution representing music that is emerging particularly from the remote northern Indigenous communities in Australia.

“In Hannover, the audiences and organisers were amazed by Nabarlek. In Germany, where there have been continuing problems in grasping the nature of contemporary Aboriginal culture (the desire only for dot paintings, only ‘authentic’ dance and lots of didgeridu), this felt like a step forward. The guys are very quiet off stage and amazingly powerful on. Their ability to go unplugged for some traditional songs and dance, only strengthened the case of their unadorned and powerful rock performances.”

Robyn Archer-Australia’s Indigenous Arts.

Through highlight performances around Australia and the world the group has steadily proven themselves to be leading the charge from the bush with their breakthrough Album “Bininj Manborlh/Blackfella Road”. This has been followed with an extensive tour of Western Australia before heading to the East Coast in early 2005. Narbarlek continue to amaze critics and gain new fans at every performance.

This series of photographic prints have been developed from paintings done by members of the Nabarlek Band of western Arnhemland, and are for sale at the Skinnyfish Music web site..

http://www.skinnyfishmusic.com.au/extras/poster3.html

Songs of the Rock Country People- Namala Namal

The traditional painting represented here by the photographic print is actually a representation of a Nabarlek song - Namala Namal Momo (from the album Bininj Manborlh)

One little boy said to his family that he was going hunting for Nabarlek and he named the place where he was going to hunt Nabarlek. The Devil peole heard where he was going and waited for him in that place.

These Devil people grabbed this boy and tasted him. The Devil people ran off to get others so they could taste him. One person went to his Aunty and the Aunty could smell fresh meat, meanwhile the little boy hit the Devil person holding him, he hit him in the heart and ran away back to his family.

The father saw the little boy coming and saw he had a hole in his cheek and his father knew what had happened, and his father could hear the Devil people singing in the distance that they were going to eat the little boy. They didn't know the little boy had escaped.

The father with his traditional power went to the cave where the devil people were dancing when the father arrived, he used his power to make that cave collapse, burying those people.

NAWAKEH is the place where those people are buried, and the spirits are trapped there and people today can still hear the sound of Magor and Beligan from those people

http://www.skinnyfishmusic.com.au/extras/poster4.html

The traditional painting represented here by the photographic print is actually a representation of a Nabarlek song: Kokok Bibayeng Modjarrkki (Big Brother Killed By A Freshwater Crocodile).

This is the story of two brothers, big brother and little brother and big brother's wife.

One morning little brother went hunting by himself, he got hot and thirsty and went to the river for a drink.

When he got there he saw the tracks of a crocodile and got excited and ran back to tell big brother. Big brother and little brother and big brothers wife went back to the river and little brother showed them the crocodile tracks.

Big brother told his wife to go and get a string bag, a big one. Big brother dived into the water and went down to where the crocodile lay sleeping on the bottom.

Big brother wrapped the string bag around the crocodile's mouth but forgot to get paperbark to put over the crocodiles eyes.

Big brother started to lift the crocodile up towards the surface but the crocodile opened his eyes and saw the sun and broke the string bag and tore big brother apart.

Little brother and big brothers wife saw this and started to cry.

Straight away when little brother saw that big brother had been killed he asked big brothers wife to marry him.

Narbarlek present a show that moves from traditional song and dance through acoustic contemporary songs to full on rock.
