Ce livre bilingue français anglais est composé d’une cinquantaine de tableaux : créations photographiques, collages, peintures, chansons… qui ont germé au fi l des voyages effectués par les auteurs. France, Mali, États-Unis, Russie, Mauritanie, Cuba… Leurs rencontres avec des hommes et des femmes hors du commun qui luttent pour sauver notre environnement, leurs témoignages, leurs expériences et leurs réfl exions apparaissent ainsi métissés à chaque page de l’ouvrage. Les chansons, qui font partie intégrante de l’oeuvre, trouvent leur écho dans un CD musical inclus, mixé à Box par Adrian Chivers !
Nadine Marchal est auteur plasticienne, directrice artistique, créatrice de tissus… Ses oeuvres sont régulièrement exposées aux États-Unis. Elle est l’auteur d’un « Carnet de Voyage à Lyon » publié en 2004. Elle a également coécrit les paroles du dernier album de Geoffrey Oryema « Words ». Réalisatrice de la partie graphique du livre, c’est encore elle qui interprète les chansons de l’album inclus ! Stanislas Pierrel est guitariste et compositeur. Il a collaboré avec Philippe Garcia, Bobby Rangel, Yves Matrat… et fait les premières parties de Nina Simone, Luther Allison. Il a composé les titres du CD.

About the Author
Nadine Marchal is a visual arts author, artistic director, fabrics designer...and more. Her works are shown regularly in the United States. She is the author of a book entitled Carnet de Voyage à Lyon, which was published in 2004. She also co-wrote the lyrics to the songs in Geoffrey Oryema s last album Words. Nadine is not only the author of the graphics portion of this book, but she also interpreted the songs in the album! Stanislas Pierrel is a guitarist and composer. He has worked with Philippe Garcia, Bobby Rangel, Yves Matrat and others. He has also performed in the first act at Nina Simon and Luther Allison concerts. He composed the songs on the CD.

123, Saulaie…
Financée par les acteurs publics (Ville d’Oullins, Etat, Région), cette action a démarré début 2008 après un important travail de réflexion durant l'année 2007.
Sous la direction artistique de Nadine Marchal, des groupes se sont formés dès février 2008. Dès lors, des ateliers artistiques (photo, vidéo, peinture, écriture...) ont débuté, cherchant à illustrer des lieux et scènes de vie du quartier. Ont participé : des groupes d'adultes et d'adolescents inscrits au centre social ainsi qu'une classe de CP-CE1 de la Saulaie.
Le but de ce projet:
- amener une population à s'approprier les nombreux changements inhérents au futur de leur quartier (arrivée du métro, démolition des anciens ateliers de la SNCF, nouvelle médiathèque, construction d'une université, incertitude sur les logements sociaux mis à leurs dispositions...)
- créer des ateliers favorisant les échanges entre générations. Ce quartier a en effet été témoin d'une histoire riche et particulière (le Bac à traille, les Tanneries, arrivée d'immigrants nord africain en masse dans les années 60, les ateliers SNCF...) une concentration de population ouvrière faite de solidarité et d'éclatement...
Le vernissage qui eut lieu le 14 novembre 2008 à 18 heures a rencontré un grand succès. Aujourd’hui, la volonté de tous, est que cette exposition devienne itinérante dans différents lieux de la ville d'Oullins mais aussi dans d’autres villes de France, voir d’autres pays.
La qualité artistique du travail présenté est à souligner. Toutes les toiles, 28 au total (grandeur 116X89CM en moyenne) on été réalisées à partir d'un travail photographique qui a ensuite été projeté sur les toiles à l'aide d'un Artographe. Les habitants ont pu ainsi se dessiner et se peindre mutuellement dans leurs scènes du quotidien et représenter les rues importantes de leur quartier.
Une relation affective s'est ainsi créée entre eux, eux et leurs toiles, eux et le devenir de la Saulaie, quartier aux nombreux changements à venir, bref une identité à retrouver.
Toute la matière créée par les habitants a ensuite servi de décors à un court-métrage.

1, 2, 3 Saulaie…
This action, named for the Oullins neighborhood it serves—with a wink at a light-hearted children’s game, was launched early in 2008 after a year of extensive study and planning. It was financed by the city of Oullins and regional and national government authorities.
Groups were set up in February 2008 under the artistic guidance of Nadine Marchal, and the project was underway! Workshops focusing on photography, video film creation, painting and creative writing sought to illustrate typical neighborhood places and happenings.
Who participated?
- Adults and adolescents who had signed up at the social center, and a class of 6- and 7-year olds at the Saulaie primary school.
What was the purpose of the project?
- Help people living in Saulaie integrate and accept the many changes their neighborhood is or will soon be experiencing (extension of the Lyon metro to Saulaie, tearing down the old railway maintenance facilities, construction of a new multi-media library and a university…and uncertainty about the subsidized housing that will be made available).
- Use workshops to encourage communication between generations. This neighborhood has a rich history all its own (the cable ferry, tanneries, arrival of large numbers of North African immigrants in the 1960’s, the railway maintenance plant, etc.) and a predominantly working class population characterized by both solidarity and separateness…
The exhibition unveiled at 6 p.m. on 14 November 2008 was a great success. Now what everyone involved wants most is for the exhibit to be shown at other sites in Oullins, in other French cities and even—why not?—other countries.
The artistic quality of the exhibition is noteworthy. All 28 paintings (average size 116x89 cm) were created by projecting photographs onto canvas with an Artograph, so that project participants could draw and paint each other in scenes from daily life and depict the most important streets in their neighborhood.
In doing so, links were created between participants, between participants and their paintings, and between participants and the future of the Saulaie neighborhood—a neighborhood in the throes of change, in other words a neighborhood that must find—or re-find—itself.
The works created by the people of Saulaie were then used for the décor of a short film.
