LISTINGS:
MUSIC
A GRAVE WITH NO NAME
A Grave With No Name are dreamy, whoozy pop with a grungy backbone. Beautiful voices entwine with processed beats, white noise and lost melodies. Sometimes slacker and stoned, they sound like Animal Collective meets Daniel Johnston.
AFRIKAN BOY
myspace.com/afrikanboy
One of a kind vocalist, Afrikan Boy, burst onto everybody's screens last year with the unforgettable 'Lidl', a track which simultaneously shocked and amused with its first hand tale of petty theft in a local supermarket and the subsequent treatment of poor Afrikan Boy. Lucky for him, MIA has kept him ont he straight and narrow with guest appearances on her 'Kala' album and on tour.
ALAN POWNALL
Singer songwriter, it’s all absolutely beautiful and all very mysterious, a stripped down acoustic singer.
ANGULAR RECORDING CO. DJS
New Cross record label of ex Goldsmiths kids who love their darling angular pop to bits. Always snatching a trend early, they’ve put out all those biggins, The Long Blondes, Klaxons and These New Puritans amongst others. Expect a cool as the other side of the pillow set from these most likely of lads.
ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT
www.myspace.com/archiebronsonoutfit
One of the last remaining true rock bands around - Archie Bronson Outfit shows are never anything less than boot stomping, barn storming tawdry affairs. You'll also be shocked at how many choruses you can sing along to. Amazing stuff.
BANJO OR FREAKOUT
Alessio Natalizia stumbled upon an ability that twiddling knobs and tarting about on the computer is not only lots of fun but something that makes truly float me away spaceman moments. Inspired by the cyclic poetry of Can, This Heat and his favourite of all Arthur Russell, he has an approach that doesn’t allow second chances.
BASS CLEF
Hackney resident Ralph Cumbers' dub seems borne of the London borough, a clash of old brass and digital noise that trawls recent decades (70s dub, 90s jungle and IDM) to recover a type of dubstep that's at once familiar and staggeringly fresh.
CASIO MOVEMENT
Purveyor of sunken glitch treasures, Casio Movement (nee Adam Dawson) throws up some chiselled electronic deposits to re-wire you shorted and queasy; telling tales of fried battleship heroes still floating just beyond orbit's reach.
CASPER C
AITBF resident Casper C also presides over the notorious Sunday club, Blogger's Delight and has toured the world as a solo DJ and one half of the Fluokids DJ team, who made their name with the influential music blog of the same name. Expect anything from deep house and psychey grooves to the latest electro-tinged techno sounds.
CLINIC
www.myspace.com/clinicvoot
We're very excited to announce a headline show from Clinic at Nail The Cross, one of the most revered cult bands from the past decade. Always ones to ignore the trends of the music industry, their fuzzed up, space sound is set to convert a whole new generation of music fan in New Cross.
COCKNBULLKID
www.myspace.com/thecocknbullkid
We've been harping on about this girl for ages and now it seems the rest of the world is about to grant her the star status she deserves. The tried and tested description of "Morrissey crossed with Neneh Cherry" still fits but now she has a full band and even more amazing pop songs.
DEADLY RHYTHM DJS
Deadly Rhythm run parties all over London. Their resident DJs play anything dance from the low end to the high. Expect to hear baltimore, dubstep, and leftfield party tunes aplenty. The Deadly Rhythm Soundsystem booms: all bow before.
GENTLE FRIENDLY
Gentle Friendly's racous noise pop is just as LA as it is their native Peckham. Melding cutting keys and rolling drums with a backdrop of loops and feedback, they transcend their obvious influences (US noise and amped-up UK eighties pop) to create something gleefully disjointed
and chaotic.
HATCHAM SOCIAL
Claiming kinship with The Violets, Neils Children and others that graduated from Southend's Junk Club scene, local boys Hatcham Social are of a more light-hearted bent than is suggested by the company they keep, the trio rapt with the fresh-faced whimsy of Orange Juice when they were but young whelps.
I BLAME COCO
www.myspace.com/iblamecoco
Whilst somehow managing to sidestep too many references to her musical heritage, it can't be denied that Coco knows to make ska tinged pop tunes that could find themselves all over the radio soon enough. She has dozens of celebrity fans too, if you're into reading your free London papers.
IPSO FACTO
www.myspace.com/ipsofactomyspace
London is the coolest city in the world right now and Ipso Facto are at the forefront of the new wave . Dark, macabre, organ-led melodies, all underpinned by a searing vocal. An amazingly striking band visually, too.
JAY JAY PISTOLET
Like a modern midnight rambler Mr. Pistolet has taken his raspy voiced lead from all the right folk, Dylan, Osbert , Gainsbourg. With a self-deprecating manner and a very pretty smile expect songs of boozy drug love and the chances of losing it all completely.
LOEFAH (DMZ)
www.myspace.com/loefah
Loefah is without a doubt a bastion of dubstep. His contributions to the DMZ imprint could be considered key moments in the evoltuion of the genre; whilst his remixes for Skream (on Tempa) and his recent Tectonic outing only serve to enforce this belief.
LONG BLONDES DJS
Long since established as one of Britain's foremost live acts, The Long Blondes take a break from onstage duties to spin some of their favourite records at this year's Nail The Cross.
LOST IN PARIS DJS
www.myspace.com/wegotlostinparis
Two young Francophiles who run an ace record label and consistently smash parties with their DJ sets. These girls play anything to make boys swoon whilst their girlfriends go off in a huff.
MATTY WHITE HEAT
Now entering its fourth year, the White Heat empire continues to expand it's borders and make waves in the industry. The list of bands that have played White Heat is basically a who's who of independently minded music since the turn of the century, as are Matty's DJ sets.
MICACHU & THE SHAPES
www.myspace.com/micayomusic
One of the most talented new faces on the London scene, Micachu is already signed to Matthew Herbert's Accidental Records label. With the help of her Shapes, she makes percussive pop that some may call alt folk, some may call wonky but everyone agrees is brilliant.
NAVVY
Hottie girls and boys who make 150 second, rhythm-driven joyous New Wave. Like robots straddling the 1980’s to the now with shouty shout vocals (think Bis, Los Campesinos! and Johnny Foreigner). Urgently important art faced pop.
NO PAIN IN POP
Pow! The joint hosts of Nail The Cross are gearing up for one awesome spinning stint. Expect a mangled, mangling mash of the finest Italo-disco, the latest steppin' riddims, good time Tropicalia and the ripest fruits plucked from the US punk underground.
ONEMAN
www.myspace.com/1manydj
Emerging on the garage scene at the turn of the century, Streatham's own ONEMAN has gone on to spread his love of 2-Step and all things bass across the globe. He cites his influences as "making people dance, brockin out til 6am, havin it large on a small wage, avoiding doing work when at work, bad taste and the powers of lager & cigarettes combined." We share his feelings.
OX. EAGLE. LION. MAN.
www.myspace.com/oxeaglelionman
Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man are the proggy doom merchant darlings of the London scene. Demonic vocals, swinging percussion and almost metallic guitar work yet all with a tongue placed firmly in collective cheek. Amazing fun to watch live too.
PIX DJS
If you've ever clutched your mitts around PiX' monochrome mag, you'll know what to expect: post-punk poster boys and girls jutting dutty amid a beat-driven maelstrom, top-buttoned and awkward at the best clubland after-parties.
POLLY SCATTERGOOD
Wispy blonde floaty as a cloud girl Polly has been steadily building her acclaim since her bed sitting days down London town. Signed to Mute Records running up the Kate Bush hill with flair and raw honesty. Yummy good
ROUGH TRADE DJS
No introduction properly needed, it’s been the best indie label since 82’ so be prepared for all the greatest records/theme tunes of your life my darlings.
S.C.U.M.
www.myspace.com/scum1968
S.C.U.M are very much part of the new breed of youngsters with genuine style and desire for a higher plane of intellectualism - London's new no wave, if you will. Our youth can't get enough of this stuff dark and daring drone.
SHOT BY BOTH SIDES DJS
A New Cross institution, having exported their legendary club night out across London Aiden and Co return to the corner of London that spawned them.... with a vengeance. Expect dark brooding indie and dance floor fillers all night.
STOPMAKINGME
AITBF and Kill Em All resident DJ Stopmakingme has won over many an admirer as of late with his unique sets of spacey disco, post punk, percussive jams, techno bleeps and clicks and good old fashioned electronic beats. His style has seen him play at Fabric, Bugged Out, Durrr, T Bar and beyond.
THE BON BON CLUB
Are we allowed to say Sheffield's The Bon Bon Club sound like DFA 1979 bored at work in a steel plant? No? Will the committee for regional stereotypes not let that pass? OK, The Bon Bon Club are, apparently, Sushi Quatro, Thirsty Moore and Chapatti Smith and they do a 'mash-up' of DFA 1979 and Gary Glitter's 'My Gang'. No steel, knives away.
HERVE (THE COUNT)
www.myspace.com/hervespace
Dubsided, Voodoo Chilli, Speaker Junk, Machines Don't Care or one his many massive remixes this year, it's been impossible not to notice Herve's touch this year. Probably the hardest working British DJ and producer around at the momet, his sets literally never fail to shake entire buildings and make kids spin around so hard that they fall all over the floor.
THE HIGH WIRE
Looking to re-create the woozy, buried pop of this year's debut LP Ahead of the Rain, The High Wire juggle melody with hints of dissonance to meld something that echoes Dennis Wilson as much as it does Spiritualized.
THE XX
Understated, minimalist and hauntingly soulful, this South London quartet are purveyors of distilled laid-back new wave pop. Think Massive Attack cuddling up to Coco Rosie, Aaliyah to The Cure, with boy-girl vocal interplay, simple instrumentals and sampled beats played in real time, melded together to create space.
THESE NEW PURITANS
www.myspace.com/thesenewpuritans
From cult favourites to proper indie stars, the ascent of These New Puritans has been a joy to watch. Their stunning debut this year mixed shoegaze, dubstep and post-punk in equal measure. Immaculately dressed (yet bleary eyed) kids were spilling out into the road last time they played the Amersham Arms, others wept as they couldn't get in.
TIN CAN TELEPHONE
www.myspace.com/tincantelephoneband
A brand new London band mixing the stylings of Q & Not U, Pavement and Architecture In Helsinki but with added breathless, tropicalia beats thrown in all over the place. A seven piece act, not to be missed.
TOMB CREW
"We're not a band" proclaims the obligatory Myspace page, "we're a lot". No arguments there; frequently packing out stages from Shoreditch to Brighton in matching t-shirts bearing the Tomb Crew legend, the collective launch brain-busting and crotch-melting mixes of hip-hop and rabid jungle-funk that nails smiles to faces and thrashes around like an infant stomping through a field of glass in daddy's Timberlands. Honestly, the most fun you will have at this
festival......
VITAMIN CLUB
Tragic backdoor jumble of brutish drone, gawky 2-step and rust-ridden lo-fi jams from waiflike pair making up for their lack of brawn with vintage juggernaut beats.
WET DOG
Wetdog are Angular Recording Corporation's all grrl trio of trebly post-punk wailers. Guitars duel and scratch, itching over shambling, stuttering two minute primal-pop rhythms. When listening to them, it's hard not to recall a ratty Raincoats, a less urgent and artless Wire or the sound of Everret True's slowly soaking panties.
YOUNG TURKS
Since announcing their arrival on the scene with a series of unforgettable, if promptly shut down, warehouse raves, the Young Turks have established themselves as a record label with a knack for spotting the next bog thing. They're on a roll with Jack Penate, El Guincho, Holy Fuck and many more!
YOUR TWENTIES
Your Twenties are one of the most exciting prospects playing the festival. This is far more than simply Gabriel Metronomy's side project. They make classic sounding guitar pop and are certainly ones to catch if you like the sound of Fleetwood Mac covering early Weezer songs.
NAV ADAM LATHAM & RICH CASH
An installation of Adam Latham’s posters provide the backdrop for a series of live performances orchestrated by Adam and Rich Cash from XX Teens. Since Graduating from the RCA MA Painting course Adam has shown his recognizable work around the UK. Adam and XX Teens have long been a successful creative partnership, with Adam providing much of this up and coming band’s record covers. Art Quest participants Take Courage Gallery are looking forward to Adam’s solo show in February.
ADAM FARAMAWY (!WOWOW!)
A spoken and musical performance, Adham will perform in choreograph with a live drummer. Adham’s work deals with the mixing of cultures and is always bold, graphic and dramatic. Adham has been involved in an art collective called !WOWOW! They became known for hosting exhibitions, performances and gigs in large warehouse spaces in south London attracting up to 1500 revellers a go.
Adham’s recent exhibitions include a screening at Tate Modern, London and a show at the new URA! space in Istanbul as well as in The Black Market at Anna Kustera Gallery, New York. Adham has a forthcoming solo show at Take Courage Gallery in October 08.
SCOTTEE
Decadent and overbearing Scottee’s performances demand attention. A figure as popular on the London club scene as he is central to the recent refreshed interest in live performance art. Art Quest proudly presents a Scottee performance upstairs at the Goldsmiths Tavern. If you like latex, black tears and glitter on a man then you don’t want to miss this.
GET A ROOM (GLASGOW)
It’s annoying when friends try and tell you the Glasgow / Berlin / Sao Paulo art scene is miles better then what’s happening in London at the moment. Stop being friends with these people now. But find out what’s happening in Glasgow whilst cleverly minimizing your travel costs with Get A Room at ART QUEST. Live performance works behind every door.
RICHARD GASPER
RCA graduate Richard is currently gaining recognition for his excessive instillation works. His excellent January Take Courage show caused quite amongst art world insiders and we expect you’ll be hearing a lot about him in the future. When asked about creating a performance for The Art Quest Richard’s response was “how obscene can i make it?... Good... I’ll need some pink perspects”. Take what you will from that.
TAKE COURAGE
Take Courage Gallery exhibits both emerging and established artists. Allowing them to work freely, without curatorial constraint. We place emphasis on critical material for each show as well as remaining open to new ways of doing things. Previous Take Courage exhibitors include:
Gareth Cadwaller, Roman Caesar, Charlesworth, Lewandowski and Mann, Charlie Coffey, Charles Ellis, Richard Gasper, Gunther Herbst, Justin Hibbs, Henry Krokatsis, Edward Payne, Mattia Reiniger, Sian Robinson-Davies, Dan Shaw-Town, Boo Saville, David Smith, Matthew Taylor, Barry Thompson, Mark Titchner.
