Purpose is the manifestation of dreams deferred and Naima J. is a poet on the path to finding herself and fulfilling her divine charge. As a writer and performance poet, Naima's words capitvates audiences and readers alike with vivd language that illustrates experience through pen strokes and ink spills. Her fiery approach to live performances traps truth between the lines of wisdom and knowledge.
In April of 2005, Naima self-published her first collection of poetry, "When Silence Speaks." While the book was accompanied by a self produced EP- "Spoken Silence" (music production provided by Natural Eye Productions), in the fall of 2005 Naima ambitiously followed up her spring release with another audio EP "Cents on the Dollar" which featured live production of JP3, Soul Shack Band, Jem Boots, Kokayi and Tamara Wellons. In the Fall of 2006, Naima J and Afrykah Wubsauda met and collaborated with a variety of artists including M-1 of Dead Prez, the and Father Jah to release Revolutionary but Sexy- a mixtape written to speak to the experience, insecurities and challenges of Black women as they work through the stigmas perpetuated by the color disparities of the mainstream American beauty aesthetic.
Although, she originally hails from Miami, Florida, for the past twelve years Naima J. has made the DC metropolitan area her home. As an evolving artist, Naima worked to establish herself featuring at open mic venues and travelling nationally to share her work at colleges and urban lounges alike. As a result, Naima has shared the stage with phenonmenal artists such as, Jahipster, Sunni Patterson, the 5thL, Olu Butterfly, Navasha Daya of Fertile Ground, Georgia Me, Tamara Wellons, Jaguar Wright, Beny Blaq, Jason Reynolds, Komplex, 13 of Nazareth and many more. As a writer and educator, Naima hopes her words inspires youth to walk their path diligently using each step as an opportunity to build character.
