Our response to
.. "5 members resign from Indian panel"..
IndyStar.com

We as Native American Indian Voices of Indiana (NAIVOI) are disheartened by the actions of the seated Indian commissioners of the Native American Indian Affairs Commission of Indiana.

In their press release they condemned Gov. Mitch Daniels of not full filling his promises and "it was all fairy tales."

However Governor Daniels reconstituted the commission after the failure first time around. Our group especially want to thank the Governor for doing so.

We also believe if the Indian commissioners were truly working for all of the Indian community within the state of Indiana, then they would still be there working with the administration on their differences.

NAIVOI's hope is for the Governor to seek out new appointees
"and will begin a search for new members."

Welcome to Voices new MySpace. We are organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, more specifically to the Native American Indian community of Indiana. We welcome you to join us at any time.

Current board members:

Sally Tuttle (chair)
Clarence Syrette
Debra Haza (vice chair)

Native American Demonstration Powwow
What is a powwow and why is it important to Native American culture? See for yourself at the Indiana State Museum. You'll experience Native American culture, traditions, history, language, and more. Feel the drums reverberate as dancers in colorful regalia perform steps that link them to generations before them. You can also talk with Native Americans about their lives today. This event is presented by the Native American Indian Voices of Indiana and the Indiana State Museum.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NAVOI

Past and present ideas of this group, or as an individual within the group, have created to bring awareness to the Native American Indian community within the state of Indiana. They are as follows:

*in cooperation with Senator Richard Lugar, created the first Native American Indian center for the state of Indiana (starting in 1993 and continues to this day)

*a member of the Native American Council under the governorship of Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon

*Started the process to create the first Native American Indian license plate for the state of Indiana

*created the first Native American Business Directory for the state. The Native American Indian Affairs Commission of Indiana is using this particular original data and is in the process of updating.

*first to call for the newspapers and tv to investigate Prophetstown and the Build Indiana Fund

*Original idea and conceptional idea of creating a commission for Indian people in the state of Indiana

*Held the first town hall meetings to gather information on education, mascots, racial hatred acts, stereotypes, housing, health and any other issues of our community to present to the legislators in creating the commission

*in cooperation with Indiana legislators, created the Native American Indian Affairs Commission for the state of Indiana

*created Proclamation Day in the statehouse rotunda

*publicly denounced a "historical factual" book about Indians

*first Indian group to start an Indian woman scholarship for residents in Indiana

*established Indian benefit concerts in raising scholarship funding

*in conjunction with the Pokagon Band Potawatomi and others, created the demonstration powwow at the Indiana State Museum for the month of November

*assisting the Eitlejorg Museum to bring for the first time the Native American Indian organizations of Indiana to Indian Market

*brought the ARTRAIN of Native American Indian art to Indiana

*currently working with a community based radio station in raising awareness of Native American Indian issues

*currently working with Minority Health in bringing health fairs to powwows within the state

We feel we have opened many doors for the Indian community in Indiana.

PROPHETSTOWN

The park is named for a Native American village located between the rivers established by Tecumseh, who was Shawnee, and his brother Tenskwatawa (The Prophet) in 1808.

Tecumseh led his band there from Ohio, where pressure from white settlers had forced him to leave. Tecumseh believed the only way to repel the advance of European settlement was to form an alliance with other tribes. He traveled widely persuading tribes to join his coalition.

Over 14 tribes set aside centuries old disputes to stop their common enemy. They met at Prophetstown, and heard The Prophet speak. Tecumseh anticipated their sheer numbers would be enough to stop the westward settlement.

William Henry Harrison, the governor of the Indiana Territory, was alarmed by the numbers at Prophetstown and moved 1200 troops to the site while Tecumseh was south gathering additional support.

Wanting to avoid a fight, yet fearing an attack, The Prophet decided to strike first in the early morning hours of November 7, 1811. The battle lasted two hours. As darkness faded, the villagers withdrew through the marsh back to Prophetstown and then fled to Wildcat Creek. Harrison's men burned Prophetstown to the ground

NAIVOI ..DOES NOT.. support the Indiana license plate that is suppose
to be for the
Native American Trust.

The proceeds from the plate
..does not go to any
Native American Trust.

No Native American Indian.. benefits at all from the plate.

The Museums of Prophetstown receives all of the money.

This has been an on going problem with the Native American Indians of Indiana and the
Museums of Prophetstown
that was created by Evan Bayh.

    Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (please see my blog):
    TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

    Where traditions are not so rare;
        Sea, country and works scent the air;
    A multitude of monuments,
        Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

    The longish pedestrian malls;
        The remnants of defensive walls;
    Historic buildings are a gauge
        Of the respect for heritage.

    Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
        Estuaries guarded by shields;
    Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
        Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

    Rivers in parts licked by trees,
        Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
    And crossed by practical delights -
        Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

    Fine churches headed at Durham;
        Football kits ad infinitum;
    Kept castles - one for study;
        Masonry behind masonry.

    And, with moulding-works out that way,
    It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

    (Hi: enjoyed my visit.)

    After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

    Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (please see my blog):
    WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

    Once drove an old sedan, up north,
    From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
    Then to Kuranda I went forth,
    By train, to look without set plans.

    I browsed through the trendy market,
    With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
    Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
    Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

    I dined in a scenic cafe;
    Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
    Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
    You go walkabout with your pen.”

    Request or question, I don’t know -
    Assured voices, elderly men.
    That’s now several years ago,
    And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
