My current project, "Paradise Lost," began with the resurrection of a song that came to me almost as a dream, later titled "Separate Tracks." It was almost as if some distant ancestor was telling a tale of times when the tribes of man and animal coexisted, if not peacefully, maybe more equally, on the planet. The first verse places one member of each tribe, a man and a wolf, at a stream. Both are thirsty, and wary of each other. Each equipped with weapons, an ax and razor teeth, respectively, but finding a kind of detente there in the forest. The power of the image was foreign to me, and I was shocked by it and surprised. It was a very strange lyric, and remains one of the most puzzling to me. Yet, the song haunts me and fills me with a sense of nostalgia I cannot reasonably possess, being born of this modern age. Still, as both creatures return home, with the sounds of crickets surrounding them, there is sense of balance, peace, and understanding that I feel we have lost in all of our "sophisticated" lifestyles. The album pursues the theme of trying to regain this balance of power, although the underlying mood suggests the impossibility of the quest. My hope is that if we can feel the longing for such a world, maybe we can imagine the resurrection of the lost world, and possibly win it back, if not in our temporal future, perhaps in our eternal.
