Naked Giant Attack are Darragh O’Connor, of well known local dance act Cartoon and Rory Dempsey, former bass player with The Shades and now full-time double bass maestro in London.
Taking their inspiration from lesser known acts such as Scandinavian jazz pioneers , Esbjorn Svensson Trio, young double bass prodigy, Avishai Cohen, and the quirky dance productions of Mathew Herbert, Naked Giant Attack have stretched the long arm of Cork’s budding dance scene into the softer soul of jazz.
However their Southern Fried track Essentially takes on a feel that is more distinctive of the four-to-the-floor house tracks O’Connor has released on Brique Rouge with Cartoon and under his former guise ‘Fusty’ on San Diego label Siesta Records.
Usually preferring to delegate vocal duties to others (save for one stand out track ‘Lies’on Cartoon’s debut album Ban the Use of Jazz Music released earlier this year) O’Connor takes up the mic with aplomb. Meanwhile Dempsey exchanges the upright bass of N.G.A.’s earlier jazz demos for the funk ‘n slap of an electric bass, giving this track a punch that wouldn’t be out of place in the sound system of any club.
The track was conceived just two weeks before the Southern Fried deadline and produced almost entirely over the internet as Dempsey and O’Connor are based hundreds of miles from each other, in London and Cork respectively. Dempsey’s sojourns to Cork however are not sparse. He is currently working with some former Shades band mates in their reincarnation as Freezer Room.
Both accomplished musicians, N.G.A. plan to take their project to the stage sometime in 2007 but, like any attack on the global music scene - not before the hard yards in the studio are completed first.
