  • Bio

From the doorway of the midwest, the NAKED MOLE RATS bring real, honest, independent american post-punk to the masses. Catchy, intricate and direct, songs of love, loss, and observations of the world around us flow from the pen, voice and instruments of Spike Mole Rat,and a new band made up of drummer John Puchan, bassist Drew Rodgers, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Dorman. .... Rock, alt, punk, jazz acoustic, post-punk... name your label, throw them all together and see what happens. Mix in guitar solos influenced harmonically by Lester Young as much as Jeff Beck as much as Tim Armstrong. Bass influenced by McCartney, Jack Bruce and Matt Fuckin Freeman. Take songwriting influenced by Mark Everett as much as Elvis Costello and John Samson. Drums influenced by the muppets' Animal, strings courtesy of George Martin, acoustic guitars by James Taylor. Shake it all around. Listen. .... Spike promotes veganism, for hundreds of reasons. We are amazingly and healthfully catered - Astrogirl chips in as Spike's lifetime creative sidekick [her first book Tamasin Noyes' "American Vegan Kitchen" was published in 2010 by Vegan Heritage Press and is available at Amazon now!) and has in the past written some very cool lyrics and even yells sometimes. She has two books coming ouit in 2012 too! Let's get eating! .... We hope you like NMR.

  • Influences

As this project enters a new phase and we start to play live, influences get wider and wider. The Naked Mole Rats really like songwriters that are intriguing, so we listen to people like Mark Everett (eels), John Samson (Weakerthans), Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Jill Sobule, even guys like James Taylor, Levon Helm and Bob Dylan. And Spike can't shake the formative late 70's rock and early 80's punk thing, so that keeps popping up. The result after a lot of years of playing various styles and writing 100's and 100's of songs make the Naked Mole Rats a mix of post-punk, rock and traditional/world influences all jumbled together. Lyrics are important - every song is about something that interests us one way or the other. We release a lot of material - a bunch of our music is available free at www.resistancepunk.com
  • Sounds Like

Socially conscious punk and rock with strings and horns sometimes, the NAKED MOLE RATS cover a lot of territory - sometimes driving Marshalls and Les Pauls, sometimes Martin acoustics and strings, and sometimes pianos, drum loops and fuzz bass. The NAKED MOLE RATS intention is to make music that's intelligent and honest, in whatever form it takes. Music is Art. The signature melodic and compositional work, and Spike's vocals, transcend the instrumentation, and hopefully unify a broader range of music than most single-format bands dare approach.
