Review in CULTURES MAGAZINE, November 2008 by Mik Eidt
On a grey day world with aggressive traffic and everybody’s race against the clock, "Wave" arrived unexpectedly to the rescue. This music opens up a parallel universe, communicating with the listener on a quite different and deep level. As when nature speaks to you – only here, in tonal metaphors and instrumental collages, and with the message of a world bursting with possibilities. As only music can, especially when in the hands of skilled musicians that masters their instruments and knows what they in common desires to express. Not innovative, but timeless. Wordless, but poetic. Not a collection of musical pieces, but a state of mind.
Bjørn Ringkjøbing’ trumpet and Morten Vilhelm Keller's keyboards paints the album’s melodic side, while Ole Theill on tabla radiates surplus and his 20 years of experience in a long line of Danish jazz and world-music ensembles, combined with studies in Benares, India.
Cello, guitar, didgeridoo and the Jew's harp shapes the organic atmospheric background pattern of sonic timbres. Wavering and abstract. Some might think stationary but with a surprising releasing force, when you as a listener come close - headphones recommended - and capture the wavelength. This is music that which give oxygen when the surroundings are deficient in oxygen. That gives light when darkness has enveloped you.
”Wave is the second album from Naked Rain, after their critically acclaimed debut ”Thunderbird Suite” from May 2006. Primus motor Morten Vilhelm Keller, founded the group in 2004 and also a member of the group Banda Sonora and behind the label Solnik Arts.
Naked Rain succeeds to work with their music in a way that it leaves the technical and physical limits, and become something else and more than music. In its category, it is in my opinion, one of this years most rich and enriching releases.
Review in DJEMBE, World Music Magazine, February 2007 by Omar Ingerslev:
This is music of qualitative weight and earnestness, floating high with a view to vivid skies and landscapes: The Thunderbird. Each part of the suite is a magic stroke of its wings, like a light seductive wind tickling the cheek.
The suite course describes the eternal flight of the thunderbird.
Indeed, the core is the native Indian myth of the thunderbird. The tale evokes contemplation and the music is amazingly beautiful, performed with profound intuition.
In all, this musical tale is a little masterpiece!
I was captured and spellbound. Subsequently surprised, realizing how far I had been carried away on the musical voyage! Independent worlds reflect in each other. It is impossible to escape from Thunderbird Suite, being in a condition of attentive concentration and distant dreams.
Morten Wilhelm Keller is the principal composer whilst the other musicians contribute vitally both as performing musicians and composers. The result is a harmonious entirety from a comprehensive variety of acoustic and electronic instruments. The musicians are all competent specialists, with great identification with the composition and improvisation. This unique interaction in the performance is stressed by the fact that the CD is based on live recordings.
Hej!! Det er altid en udsgt fornjelse at lytte til jeres Musik!! Hrte CD`en Wave igen i Aftes!! Dejligt! M i have en God Jul!! Hber at hre jer Live engang!! Krligste hilsner fra Kim.
