"We want to play music that people can relate to."
"We want our song to get stuck in your head."
"We want you to have a good time watching us play."
"We don't want to sound just like everyone else."
These phrases are the driving force behind the creativity of Names Of The Innocent, an established face on the Arizona rock scene. With members from Prescott and Mesa, all five members bring a unique talent and taste, which create a powerful combined sound. Each member has been in many different bands in the past, yet each one agrees that this one is the most special. Everything just fits together perfectly.
Names Of The Innocent was formed in August 2003 by Jeremy. Jeremy (vocals, guitar) had recently moved back to Arizona from New York, and was eager to get a new band together. He met Jesse (drums) and Steve (bass), who had been playing together their whole lives, and started writing songs with them. Jeremy contacted an old friend, Ben, that he had played with in a past band, and asked him to sit in with them to try out the new material. Soon after, Ben (guitar, vocals) was permanently added to the mix. After that, they started to mold their sound into what it is today. In late 2008, Names Of The Innocent added a fifth member, Jim (Keys) to round out their sound and take their live shows to the next level. Anyone who has listened to their debut album has agreed that it has a great sound and feel, as well as maintaining a solid rock sensibility. Their shows are equally as energetic and fun.
Who do they sound like? Like all new bands, they are asked that very question all the time. The truth is, it's hard to describe. All they can do is list their influences, and let the listener make their own comparisons. Their influences are (in no particular order): The Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band, Jimmy Eat World, The Who, Our Lady Peace, Better Than Ezra, Sleater-Kinney, Van Halen, Elliott Smith, Radiohead, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin.
Names Of The Innocent has been showcased all over Arizona area at many of its clubs and festivals. The band has played all over the valley, including 3 times as a sponsored band on the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon, multiple times for the Edge 103.9’s “Local Frequency” show, as well as a featured act at the Tempe Marketplace District stage and Prescott Valley Entertainment District. Other venues include (but are not limited to) The Clubhouse, The Sets, The REAL Bar, The Brickhouse, Chaser's, Club Red, 4 White Walls, Chaser's, The Rogue Bar, Casablanca Nightclub, The Goathead, and Cadillac Ranch.
Their new album "Two Hours Up" was recorded and mixed by Mike Bolenbach at Full Well Recording Studios, recently voted best rock studio in the New Times and producer for other favorite local acts such as The Impossible Ones, Nunzilla, and Dephinger. "Two Hours Up" is currently for sale on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, CDBaby, and multiple other distributors locally and digitally. It was mastered by Roger Seibel, who has also worked on albums for Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, The Decemberists, Calexico, Elliott Smith, Tegan & Sara, and Veruca Salt, among others.
So far, Names Of The Innocent have developed a nice following, and it has grown considerably since the new release. “Two Hours Up” has been received to good reviews by many already. Tour dates around the Valley to support the new release will begin in early 2009. Make sure you catch them at the next show!
Underwater Getdown decided to throw us a benefit out of the goodness of their hearts, and we love them for that (actually, we love them anyway, but that is beside the point). Support community media, support local music, and have a kickin' good time all at once for a measly 5 bucks!
Thankful Birds (your favorite indie/jazz/blues/can't-make-up-their-minds band) are making sweet music this Friday at Hollywood Alley. It's a great bill with Haymarket Squares, Green Lady Killers and the Sugar Thieves.
