NAMORI was born in 1964 in the Republic of Ivory Coast, in
Western Africa. At an early age, NAMORI constantly surprised those around him.
In his native village of Sinfra, it was said that he used to be a talented
drummer in his mother’s womb ! As a child, he was already rushing to achieve his
ambitions. Every single object he touched became an instrument. At age 10 he was
drawing audiences by playing with a cardboard drum in the streets. Later, he
left his village for Abidjan the capital city of Ivory Coast, and there he
played with a variety of African professional musicians, such as Mamadou Doumbla,
Kassiry, Felix and Agnebi Jazz From 1980 to 1993, he performed with some other
well-known artists : Salif Keita and Mory Kanté. He played in Bobo-Dioulasso,
Niamey, Yaoundé and a number of other African cities. He also toured in Paris,
London and Palermo with Jules Rennes, Nadji, Luc Luderman and Christian Poloni.
These experiences allowed him to broaden his horizons and add new rythms to his
traditionnal Gouro (his mother’s language) and Koyaka (father’s language)
repertory. As a composer/arranger and drummer/singer he created the AWANA group
(1993-2000) which led to the production of two albums: Tchapou Tchapette (act1),
produced in Paris in 1994 with the help of the Ivory Coast Ministry of culture
and Yoff, featuring the composer/guitarist Michel Cusson, produced in Montreal
in 1999 by Dep and Nuits d’Afrique. These two albums allowed him to perform on
international stages in four continents : Africa, Europe, America and Asia. He
took part in the Memphis Music Festival in May and played alongside Stevie
Wonder, Rod Stewart and Joan Baez. Making Montreal his home in 2001, NAMORI
keeps on exploring “sound fusion” and participates in numerous jazz sessions in
the city. He also played along with Jean Leloup both as conductor and drummer in
2003. In 2005, he released the demo Anzara, a prelude to today's new album Gui
Blo(2006) meaning Reflections in Gouro, his mother's African native language.
This new recording offers a blend of Jazz and African music, with lyrics in
Gouro, Dioula and sometimes in French ( ... )

Depuis sa naissance en Côte d'Ivoire en 1964, NAMORI n'a
cessé d'en étonner plusieurs. Dans son village à Sinfra, on raconte même que
dans le ventre de sa mère, il jouait déjà de la batterie avec virtuosité ! Très
jeune, NAMORI donne des signes d’un enfant pressé de réaliser ses ambitions.
Tous les objets qui lui tombent sous la main sont bons pour produire des sons.
Dès l’âge de dix ans, il se fait remarquer alors qu’il joue sur une batterie de
carton dans la rue. Il quitte alors son village pour la capitale, Abidjan, où il
accompagne plusieurs musiciens africains professionnels tels que: Mamadou
Doumbia, Kassiry, Felix et Agnebi Jazz. Entre 1980 et 1993, il accompagne
plusieurs artistes de renom tels Salif Keita et Mory Kanté lors de tournée à
Bobo-Dioulasso, Niamey, Yaoundé et autres villes africaines. Il tourne aussi en
Europe avec Jules Rennes, Nadji, Luc Luderman et Christian Poloni. Ces
expériences lui permettent d’élargir ses horizons. Il ajoute à son répertoire
traditionnel Gouro (langue de sa mère) et Koyaka (langue de son père) plusieurs
rythmes nouveaux. Entre 1993 et 2000, à titre de compositeur-arrangeur et
batteur-chanteur il crée le concept du groupe AWANA, qui l’amène à réaliser deux
albums : Tchapou Tchapette (acte 1) produit à Paris avec l’aide du Ministère de
la Culture de la Côte d’Ivoire (1994) et Yoff, produit par Dep et Nuits
d’Afrique à Montréal (1999) auquel Michel Cusson le compositeur-guitariste a
participé. Ces deux albums lui ont permis de se produire sur plusieurs grandes
scènes internationales d’Afrique, d’Europe, d’Amérique, telles: le Festival de
Memphis In May pour jouer sur la même scène que Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart et
Joan Baez. Établi à Montréal, Québec depuis 2001, NAMORI poursuit sa recherche
de "fusion des sons". Il participe à plusieurs session de jazz de la métropole.
Il accompagne aussi Jean Leloup à titre de batteur et chef d'orchestre (Album et
tournée La Vallée des réputations-big band). En 2005, il lance l’album démo
Anzara qui l’amène à vous offrir un an plus tard l’album Gui Blo (2006), qui
signifie « La pensée » en gouro, la langue africaine de sa mère. Ce nouveau cru
offre principalement un mélange de sonorités jazz et africaines, teinté de rock
attitude, de cadence reggae et d’inflexions soul avec des textes en gouro, en
dioula et en français.
