nanbanjin - A 3 piece Art-Pop band formed in May 2004.
For the first 2 years of their existence nanbanjin focused their attentions on gigging around the island of Kyushu, however following a successful 10 date tour of the UK in the summer of 2006 the band have broadened their horizons. Now regulars on the the Fukuoka and Kansai music scenes, nanbanjin are also expanding their sphere of activity beyond the borders of Japan with a short tour of Seoul, Korea in June 2008 and tour of Uzbekistan sponsored by Tuborg beer in August 2008.
Nominated 'Best Foreign Band' in 2007 by the Japan's largest English language publication, Japanzine, the group have also recently attracted the attention of a variety of Japanese language publications in both the Kyushu and Kansai regions.
With existing musical genres failing to describe the band accurately nanbanjin have taken it upon themselves to create the genre ‘Art-Pop’ for their own music. The genre describes a combination of experimental spirit and structures (as exemplified by Art-Rock bands such as Sonic Youth) together with an unashamedly melodious and poppy sound.
nanbanjin are always looking for original and interesting ways to bring their music to new audiences in any part of the world. If you would like to collaborate with the group on a project of any kind then please contact us through this myspace account.
"Nanbanjin consist of Dai Evans (gtr/vocals, Wales), Eoin Jordan (bass, England) and Manabu Mori (drums, Japan) and are based in Kyushu, western Japan. As you might expect from that, they present a very different sound indeed. Its dramatic and powerful and almost impossible to categorise. Dai Evans’ vocals are just HUGE and the power of the rhythm section monumental. Quite simply put, you have to actually listen to this to come to grips with it. Extraordinary"
- BIG INDIE COMEBACK VOL.3 review
"Huge soaring vocals over burrundhi type beats, atmospheric and simply amazing"
- MATCHBOX RADIO 24.
"Two brits and an animal who have an admirable commitment to melody mixed with contortionist chord formations... I advise anyone to go and have a look"
- JOHN WILKS Japanzine
