Nancy began playing in Dayton, Ohio. She received tremendous encouragement and inspiration from the founding father of blues-rock guitar, Lonnie Mack, and joined him in performances in Ohio, Kentucky, New York and Nashville. While based in Dayton, she toured with Grammy-award winner John Lee Hooker, performing at Carnegie Hall and the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival, and also performed with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Albert Collins, Willie Pooch, and Dave Workman.
Nancy relocated to San Francisco, California in 1984 to join a local New Orleans R&B band, Hot Links, which toured the US and Canada. Nancy spent her off nights in local blues clubs such as Larry Blakes (performing with Rat Band members from the Robert Cray Band) and Eli’s Miles High Club (performing with Francis Clay, Mississippi Johnny Waters, and Sonny Lane). The NOLA connection led to tours and performances with Katie Webster (including the Chicago Blues Festival), and New Orleans legends Johnny Adams, Earl King, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, and C.P. Love. Nancy also toured with Elvin Bishop, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Greg “Fingers” Taylor and the Ladyfingers Revue (which also featured Janiva Magnus and Debbie Davies and opened for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band on their top-grossing U.S. Outpost Tour), Joe Louis Walker, Maria Muldaur, Earl Thomas, Steve Willis, and Ron Hacker.
Nancy has performed and recorded with artists, including: B.B. King (appearing on his Grammy-award winning Blue Summit Album), Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Lowell Fulsom, The Coasters, Jimmy McCracklin, Pee Wee Crayton, Ike Turner, Jay McShann, the Jackie Payne/Steve Edmonson Band, Angela Strehli, Tracey Nelson, Phil Guy, Frank Bey, Mighty Mike Schermer, Macey Blackman, Michael Osborne, Anthony Paule, Kenny “Blue” Ray, Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Mark Hummel, John Allair, Annie Sampson, Otis Riley, the Delta Wires, Paris Slim, Jerry Shelfer, Bobby Reed and Charlie Owen. Nancy also performed in the San Francisco run of the Broadway Musical Gospel at Colunus (featuring Morgan Freeman, Pops Staples, Clarence Fountain and the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Soul Stirrers).
While the blues and R&B thread remains strong in the tapestry of Nancy’s music, in the late 90’s a new thread appeared—the opportunity to work with local Hammond B3 organ artist Jackie Ivory (who worked with sax illuminaries such as Junior Walker and Willis Jackson). This rekindled Nancy’s love of organ combo music, and led to performances with Hammond star Tony Monaco. Nancy continues to broaden her music style today through work with Darlene Langston, Bruno Pelletier-Bacquaert and other local jazz artists, and has recently laid down tracks with the Tony Monaco Trio for her first solo CD (to be released on Chicken Coop Records in early 2009).
In gratitude for the influence of New Orleans musicians on her musical life, in early 2008 Nancy traveled to the NOLA area with a team from Lakeside Presbyterian Church to participate in the post-Katrina rebuild effort. There is still much to be done . . .
Nancy currently resides in San Francisco and freelances in the Bay Area. She is available for performances (as a sideman or with her combo), recording, arranging and lessons.
