Nan has been influenced by everything that she has ever been exposed to and in fact listens to a very wide variety of musical styles. In particular, she has been influenced by the classic rock sounds of Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Starship, Santana, Pink Floyd, The Beatles - the list literally goes on and on.
She is a student of the fabulous female singer/songwriters and women of rock including Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Melissa Ehteridge, Sheryl Crow and Alanis Morissette, whose power and courage have all touched her and become an integral part of who she is.
Finally, there is a special place in her heart for Bob Dylan, Neil Young, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, and all of the other wonderful singer/songwriters who have stayed true to their songcraft and whose lyrics are a part of her very soul.
Sounds Like
While it is hard to put a name on originality, Nan's work has often been compared to Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin. Her personal and poetic lyrics, well crafted songs, simplistic harmonica stylings and acoustic rythyms, sultry vocals and melodic acoustic rock original songs have drawn her favorable comparisons to all of these artists.
Nan's album, Inside Looking Out, is now available on DigStation. CDs are available at live shows until the CD Baby release date to be announced.
**NEWS FLASH** Proceeds from CD and download sales from now through March 2010 will go to benefit The Arc Gloucester's Camp Sun 'N Fun, a camp for individuals with special needs in Williamstown, NJ. The money is being donated to help finish the new air conditioned dining hall.
Inside Looking Out is the highly anticipated first independent studio release of singer/songwriter Nan Ivins. These recordings capture a deep current of emotions, grabbing the listener right out of the gate with the hook ridden lead guitars of My Destiny, a track which highlights the depth of Nan’s sultry vocal style, and doesn’t let go until the final number on the CD, the hauntingly beautiful acoustic track Elusive Dream. From the heart-wrenching lyrics and string arrangements of I’ll Be Right Here, to the emotionally charged and understated love song Take My Breath Away, the songs on this CD are genuine and intense, taking the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride. The powerful lyrics of Learning To Live Again eloquently draw on the emotions of picking up the pieces after a bad relationship, and the sweet harmonies of the lead guitar on this track drive these emotions home. The heavy handed guitars and deep lyrics of No Way Out on the surface seem to be about addictions, but are an expression of the frustration and rage of living with anxiety and depression. Try To Tell Myself offers a glimpse into trying to avoid falling in love again, and in the end letting love win, and the flirty rock number Can’t Get Enough gives us a glimpse into Nan’s sense of humor. Put Your Hands Together is a fun and triumphant tribute to Nan’s secret to making it and finding happiness, just going with the flow and letting the rhythm of life carry you through.
Nan’s hard work and dedication to her song craft have paid off. This collection is a very well done independent production and is definately one that you will want to have in your collection.
