   Hugh's Blurbs
About me:

Composer, father, son, experimentalist, soup cook.

I bought a piano a year ago from an old woman moving house in Torbay. her name is Peggy and I composed a tune for her called 'After Peggy'. It is a small 'D'Almaine piano and fits in the cellar.

Not really sure where I'm from. But feeling more a part of the SW after being here for thirty months.

Just finished a residency on Dartmoor called Triparks and created a 'Dartmoor Altitude Harmonium'. Also writing music for the new Faulty Optic show to open in London Jan 16th 2009 (London Mime Festival). Working with Blazing Tales.

18 new songs with words by Jackie Kay, overdubbed vocals, fender rhodes and occasional drum machine.

I play piano, viola, harmonium, melodica, guitar.

Natural Causes - see myspace.com/naturalcausesuk. Also my collaborations with ben McCabe - www.myspace.com/burstfaun.

Darling (wma, 4:26, 4.1Mb) words by Jackie Kay
Flying (wma, 4:29, 4.2Mb) words and music mine, with lots of overdub harmonies
Harmonium (wma, 2:47, 3Mb) Latest song about new life and finding harmoniums and pianos in churches to play

Homemade Lemonade - Lancaster based purveyers of live electronically enhanced indie folk:

"Loops, drones and spiralling riffs with mantra-like vocals characterise much of their live set. Crashing waves of guitar under a chant of ‘I can walk on water’ … give way to a bleak early-Factory Records sound updated with electronic effects … reaching an impressive drawn out climax in the explosive ‘Bliss, Ostensibly.’"(Lunecy Review, July 2009).

Pencil In - Preston-based alternative rock.

Pencil In are a four piece alternative rock band hailing from the North West of England. Coupling the incredible vocal clarity of Bill Orrick with layered, effect soaked, post rock soundscapes and waves of raunchy balls-out heaviness, theirs is a truly unique sound.

Satellites - 4-piece based in Lancaster
Post-rock, ambient, progressive - "a double measure of post rock served with a generous helping of progressiveness."

Quisling Meat - This is a mystery guest of sorts. He's been in Dry Green, the Pier Group, the Thens, the Plastic Noons, and more. He's been away for a while, but he's back in Lancaster. Don't miss this!

OOR#7
Dean McPhee - erstwhile Lancastrian, now living in Yorkshire, coming back with his trademark Telecaster/Fender amp/reverb-laden sound and melodic mostly-written, partly improvised pieces of custom psych-drone pickery. A ne 7" single on World In Winter records out very soon.
Sam & the Plants - Sam has released several great records/cds on Mr Tastemaker Andy Votel's Twisted Nerve label. Playing old keyboards, beaten up classical guitars and instruments that look like zithers he's made himself, he creates a shambling lo-fi sound all his own. Often very beautiful, always with a sense of humour and humility.
David A Jaycock Quartet - Playing with long-time collaborater Andrew Preston, David shares the instruments about, vintage guitars/synths/banjo/lap steel etc. Now with a great drummer and a cellist too! Having released two fantastic albums on Red Deer Club Recordings, DAJ is a most respected new-folk figure who creates an other-worldly cinematic minimalist ambience it's a pleasure to be let in on.
Dan Haywood's New Hawks - Dan Haywood possesses one of the most original and achingly personal voices in music today (both his physical voice and his narrative voice). The New Hawks are an ambitious suite of songs all taking place within a specific time and place. Dan has assembled a strange but talented collection of musicians to fulfill this most special project.

Hi Hugh, your rhino song got a mention on the uni bulletin this week! Fame beckons I think...
Hope everything is still hunkydory down there.

Tom.

P.S. If you are around Huddersfield on Monday 26th of March (a slim chance perhaps, but worth a mention), Anne's final year project, in the form of an installation/exhibition is taking place in Studio 1 of the Milton Building on campus every hour from 12 noon to 9pm (free ticketed entry)
