The bitchy cowgirl meets the wind-swept valkyrie.
Danish singer Nanna Amter released her first CD in the spring of 2006 and if you didnt know any better, you might be excused for thinking that she was a genuine American, unfussy and untamed country music singer.

31-year-old Danish country music singer Nanna Amter released her first full-length album March 11. Stories Behind The Tears is a collection of 12 of Nannas most personal songs. Stories of relationships gone bad and of heartbreak, but most of all about how to move on.
- No matter how blue I feel, nobody will ever break me completely. Im like a weed in your garden; I always bounce back. Thats essentially what my songs are about, Nanna says.
- My motto might be summed up in the line: break my heart and I will break yours twice, because this is not a collection of songs that cry and beg for that great love-of-my-life to come back. They are stories about how life can go on in a meaningful way.
Nanna Amter is no stranger to heartbreak and shattered illusions, so inspiration for the songs was always close at hand. The CD is dedicated to past lovers for that same reason; without them, the songs would not have had the same intensity and heart.
It was sheer coincidence that country music became Nannas genre of choice. Ten years ago she overheard a country music band practicing, sang along on the songs, and was invited inside to jam. Before the night was over, the band had a new singer.
- I guess I'm just a weird mix of Viking and cowgirl. The Viking part represents my tenacity, which I think comes from my Faroe Islands ancestry. The cowgirl is my devil-may-care attitude, which says that I take orders from nobody, Nanna explains.
To ensure her artistic freedom, Nanna has chosen to finance recording, marketing, and distribution of her debut album herself, working with a handful of very skilled individuals. This has given her full control of the music from the first lines on the tape recorder to the finished CD.
She is backed by a very experienced group of outstanding country musicians in Janus Bechmann, Morten Maltesen, Per Kolling, Gustaf Ljunggren, and Jacob Horney. Morten Maltesen is also the producer of the CD.
European audiences had their first opportunity to hear Nannas music February 4, 2006, when she and the band performed at the important Country Music Messe in Berlin.
Nanna was born in Copenhagen, but grew up in Aabenraa in Southern Denmark. At age twenty, she moved back to the capital for a couple of years, but for the last eight years she has lived in Aarhus, the second largest city. Nanna is one quarter Faroese, but didnt get the opportunity to visit the small North Atlantic archipelago until 2005. When she did, it was love at first sight, and Nanna took the swift decision to release her CD there on February 13, 2006 before anywhere else.
- When I came to the Faroe Islands I felt like I had found a place where I really fit in. I could see a lot of myself in the strong Faroe women. I found a very important piece of my personal puzzle up there.
