Profile of ARSENIC ANNIE – The Musical
Arsenic Annie, the musical is based on the life of romance-loving, lonely hearts club serial killer Nancy (Nannie) Doss - born Nancy Hazle in Blue Mountain, Alabama - whose loving, Christian, motherly persona, cleverly feigned innocence and grief deterred suspicion over the “accidental” and “natural” deaths of her victims as she murdered her way around the country disposing of unwanted children, grandchildren, her own mother, one of her mothers-in-law and four of her five husbands. Nannie’s luck ran out when she botched her first attempt to poison her fifth husband, Sam Doss, and sent him to the hospital instead of the grave. The day after his release, Nannie finished Sam off with a meal of roast pork, and dessert accompanied by a fatal dose of arsenic. Dismayed at the suspicious death of his patient, Sam’s physician ordered an autopsy – the first of her victims to be autopsied. Finding enough arsenic in Sam’s system to kill a herd of horses, authorities arrested and ultimately obtained Nannie’s confession to Sam’s murder. Asked why she murdered Sam, Nannie replied that it wasn’t malicious, just that “He wouldn’t let me watch my favorite programs on the television…made me sleep without the fan on the hottest nights. He was a miser and well, what’s a woman to do under those conditions?” She was found guilty of Sam’s murder and died “still searching for love and romance” while serving a life sentence in the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
