I started writing music as Naomi Hates Humans in 2006. I'd been out of uni for a couple of years and had moved to London (having grown up in rural sussex and gone to uni in bournemouth). I hated my job and my flat, my band had split up, I'd stopped writing songs and was incredibly lonely. I came in to a bit of money and went to Tokyo for a week by myself. I can't speak japanese and I don't know anyone out there. I didn't know the japanese for 'vegetarian' so mainly just ate bananas and ice cream the whole time. I also barely slept because I couldn't aclimatise to the heat/time difference. It was wonderful. When I got back I felt refreshed - there's nothing like not eating, sleeping or talking to anyone in one of the most densely populated and strangest cities in the world to make you reassess things.
Soon afterwards I started writing songs again and took to performing with just my acoustic guitar under the name Naomi Hates Humans. The name harks back to my old band, Morbo Hates Humans (Morbo being the newsreader with the big green head in Futurama). I played anywhere that would have me for a couple of years; pubs, clubs, youth clubs, gardens, house parties, etc and sold homemade demos for a pound a go.
After 2 years I decided to record an album using some money my grandfather had left me. I wanted to do something a bit different to my live experience so I roped in Lewis and Sagar as my band. Lewis was one of the best guitarists I knew so obviously I made him take up bass while i continued to mangle the guitar. Sagar was the best drummer I knew and also my flatmate at the time so it was easier to organise him. After a few months of practicing we recorded the first album. We recorded and mixed 12 songs in 22 hours. Needless to say, the production was a little ropey. We played live as a band for the first time at the album launch and that was supposed to be it but I really enjoyed the experience so pushed for it to continue.
We played live as a three-piece for over a year and the sound and the way I wrote songs started to really evolve as a result. The new songs were such a world away form the earlier ones that we wanted to get new recordings out there. We recorded the new EP with Andrea Adriano at his Playtime Studios. The EP will be released on 26th October 2009.
In August 2009 Sagar came to the difficult decision that he just didn't have time to be in two bands and as a consequence would have to leave Naomi Hates Humans. We obviously made a good impression on Andrea during the recording process as he agreed to join us on drums. Sagar was such an important part of the sound that we thought it would be a little crass to just switch out drummers and carry on like nothing had changed so Lewis and I decided this would be a good opportunity to expand the sound (and band) by getting in our good friend Josh McCartney on lead guitar and backing vocals. So far, so good!
