Volume 1 was released in 2005 at the feast of San Gennaro,
in New York City. The first project of its kind, Napolizm Vol. 1 documented
the Neapolitan hip hop scene as it stood at that moment in time. By uniting
many of Napoli’s diverse and dynamic artists on one compilation, Napolizm
gave a voice to an underground yearning for peaceful expression in a city
plagued by corruption, violence and ignorance. It brought international
attention to the sound of Napoli’s urban street culture and continues to be
a testament to the importance of the city as a centre of art and culture. The
compilation was enthusiastically received in the US by hip hop heads,
scholars, artists and the Italian American community. Although Napolizm
vol. 1 was never officially released in Italy, it immediately became and
remains a favorite among bootleggers throughout the country. The project
has since inspired other compilations celebrating the unique style of hip-
hop realism that comes from artists hailing from the south of Italy.
In Spring 2007 in anticipation of Volume 2 the project was presented at the
Biennale of Art in Venice in conjunction with MoMA PS1 of NYC. Napolizm
Vol. 2 takes a fresh look at the scene two years later. It again unifies the
hip hop community of Napoli and its surrounding areas giving a voice to
urban poets, musicians and producers who detail the beauty, and complexity
of life in the Neapolitan jungle.
