Part heroin sunset, part shotgun blast, and very much everything in between, Narco Lolo is band of brothers driven by an undying passion for honest musical expression. Hailing from Philadelphia, Narco Lolo has set out on a mission to not only create emotionally-aggressive big-beat 'wit-rock', but to add their voices to the registry of artists who choose to make life in the new world order their muse. Peppered with an undercurrent of social activism, NLL Draws upon influences from all areas of life as far-ranging as Howard Zinn to Henry Rollins, 70s Soul to Pete Seeger, from Noam Chomsky to 90s Hip Hop, Arundhati Roy to Radiohead, from the beginning to infinity... Narco Lolo melds infectious rhythmic grooves with distorted and ambient guitars alongside synthetic overtones to lay the backdrop for a poignant & punchy vocal delivery. Having been compared in part to the varying likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, & The Doors, Lolo is humbled by the comparisons yet is intent on carving out their own slice in the musical spectrum.
Each member of Narco Lolo (Ash Kernen - vocals, Anthony Phillips - guitar, Wes Cole - bass, Alexander Cornelius - drums) is an appendage of unique experience that allows for the whole to be greater than the sum of its parts. Whether it's Ash's driven opinions, Anthony's kindred spirit, Wes's fun-loving approach to life, or Alex's cool, calm, and collective demeanor, there's no shortage of inspiration for Lolo to draw upon.
In early 2008, NLL dropped their first studio effort, 'Schematics', a 6-song EP that ran the gamut from acoustic ballads to acid-funk. The EP proved to be a promising effort and set the stage for a follow-up year of vigorous live shows at some of the tri-state area's best rock venues including The Khyber, The M Room, Tritone, Jonny Brenda's, and more. The live shows were received with great enthusiasm and garnered a fair amount of recognition in local circles. After a short hiatus in late 2008, the newly reconstituted Narco Lolo began 2009 burrowed in the studio writing for their 2010 full length debut. Aided by an enthusiastic fire that time away so often brings, the sessions have spawned a 3-part demo series known as the The Evolution EPs. These EPs, consisting of rough mixes and one-off songs, (the first of which was released in June, 'Apes'), showcase various sides to the band in the writing process. The final two, 'Humans' and 'Robots' are scheduled for a fall 2009 release.
As 2009 winds on, Narco Lolo continues to make waves in the Philadelphia Area. With a full schedule that includes live shows, the prep & release of the Evolution EPs, writing for the full length, and a November swing through Western PA and OH, Narco Lolo will undoubtedly continue to grow its footprint and win over the world, one fan at a time!
