Nardis Jazz Club which started in October 29th 2002, has successfully finished its 4th season. The new season will start in September 7th 2006. Nardis is a place where the main concentration is music. Although there is high quality food of various dishes, Nardis has never aimed to be a restaurant. Starting from the start, Nardis Jazz Club has very strict principles which are totally consistent with jazz tradition and similar clubs elsewhere;
1) The main focus of Nardis is the stage, music and the musicians. Silence during live performances is a necessity for respect to music, musicians and the other audiences, and this is our main principle which we have never compromised with anything since our start.
2) Jazz is not an expensive music style. In Turkey, jazz has been perceived as a music style which is consumed with rich and elite. We as Nardis, think that jazz is a music of intellectual elites rather than rich, that’s why we have kept the entrance charge as low as possible. We have demanded student fees except weekends. Currently the entrance fees 20.-YTL, (13.-USD) for adults and 10.-YTL (6.50 USD) for students. Turkish jazz enthusiasts has listened to local and international jazz artists with these prices except bands like Al Foster and Benny Golson which were 30.-YTL (20.-USD).
3) Jazz is a living music style. We think that jazz has to be listened and consumed not only in certain periods like jazz festival times, but all over the year. That’s why local jazz artists are very important for us. Nardis has featured Paolo Fresu, Ron Affif, Benny Golson, Al Foster, Eddie Henderson, Rosenna Vitro, Deborah Davis, Ted Curson, Dave Kikoski, Wess Anderson, Valery Ponomarev etc., and will definitely have more. But the main mission of Nardis is to provide a scene for local jazz artists. Almost all of the local jazz artists have performed in Nardis, several projects which then performed in festivals and other stages and released CD’s such as Quartet Muartet, Passiflora, Vural & Focan Project have emerged from Nardis.
4) Nardis provides occasions for young aspiring jazz musicians. Young jazz artists such as Burak Bedikyan, Ferit Odman, Kagan Yildiz etc. who are not only playing with the musicians of their generations but with local and international jazz stars, have first started their carrier in Nardis. We are providing international performance possibilities for young local musicians. We brought young vocal contestants to 2005 and 2006 Nomme Young Singer Contest in Estonia and 2006 Lady Summertime in Finland, in which we are participating as a jury member. In 2005 and 2006 we have organized Nardis Young Jazz Singer Contest, of which the prices are to attend the above mentioned international contests.
5) Nardis has provided a performance stage for other music styles and musicians who are not in jazz category. Specifically on Monday nights, non-jazz bands like Yansimalar, Ergin Gurkey Perkusyon Band, Okay Temiz Oriental Wind and Magnetic Band Projects, Orhan Osman (Buzuki Orhan), Turay Dinleyen-Mozaik, Muammer Ketencoglu, Anjelika Akbar, Erkan Ogur-Ismail Demircioglu, Dogan Canku, Tolga Salman (bandoneon), Mogollar and Esin Avsar, who wanted to perform in clubs in addition to concert halls, played in Nardis.
6) Nardis will continue to serve jazz, jazz musicians and enthusiasts of Istanbul following the above mentioned principles. Our sponsors Tuborg-Carlsberg, Emirates Airlines, Axess, Cross Pen Co. Turkey (previous years) have both sympathetically and financially support our work until now. We would like to emphasize our gratitude to our sponsors.
