Anything with a point and a purpose. If it makes the world a better place or broadens my understanding of a situation or an emotion my ears are wide open and after I'm done bein' all like deep and stuff I wanna hear tune that will cause me to react by throwing my arms in the air, screaming "woooooo" before getting down to the very serious business of "shocking out"!!!
Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Omar, Fusion, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Moloko, Razorlight, Rick Astley (don't laugh I was young and impressionable) Shaun Escoffery, Beres Hammond, Prince, Sanchez, Jamiroquai, Kano, Spandau Ballet, R. Kelly, Goapele, SWV, Bros, TLC, Eric Roberson, Erykah Badu, Wan Cee, Alicia Keyes, "Never gonna give you up, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna turn around and hurt you..."(okay its out of my system.) Nasir Jones, Jodeci, Jay-Z, DMX, Floetry, Common, Mos Def, Earth Wind & Fire.
Okay so I just realised what a tall order listing my all influences is but I think you get the picture and if you don't, I LOVE MUSACK!!!!
Sounds Like
A ripe sweet mango hitting the ground with a soft thud after a gentle Jamaican breeze loosens it from the branches grip.
Ageing A&Rs recruit young girls to cover the classics while cool hunters help legends chase youth. Natalie Maddix plays no part in the musical merry-go-round.
The South London singer/songwriter is what she is an original new voice with a soul that belies her 23-years.
Brixton born and raised, hers is a sound tempered by summer barbeques, late night blues and her mothers Beres Hammond, Sanchez and Marcia Griffiths 45s.
Already a seasoned live performer, Natalie is at ease with her audience, whether showcasing that rich and powerful voice or sharing a story that inspired her next number.
She has energized the capitals spoken word circuit with potent paragraphs and injected some welcome colour into the UKs neo soulscape. Attendees of G-Hop soul, Soul Unique and the Brixton Picture Houses intimate live jams will testify.
As a singer/songwriter her influences are manifold. Wearing her love for R&B and hip hop on her sleeve Natalie mixes in the sounds of the past to create a style all of her own.
Songs like You Made Me Danceuphold the lovers rock tradition. Its carefree message will strike a chord with anybody who ever ventured onto a dancefloor and found themselves lost in music.
Beautiful Love celebrates a beauty that is more than skin deep and Lets Make A Movie finds the able wordsmith penning a sensual love scene with blue ink and mood lighting.
Natalie Maddix's latest material finds a sister on a journey of self-discovery.
Songs like the rare-grooving Running From Love, the West Indian bashment meets Northen Soul affair that is Fool In Love and the ethereal Falling show a growth in both her writing and musical range.
Her live show has also enjoyed a steady evolution - from classic quartet to a cutting edge ensemble capable of embracing new influences and a new audience.
As Natalie Maddix readies herself to release her debut album, tentatively titled Sing Maddix Sing, prepare to welcome one of the UKs most exciting new voices.
