OBI ABATA plays Cuban carnival music @ Maleny Street Carnival
Music, art ,good people, and travelling are my passions.
I am an Afro/Latin percussionist, vibed by music that lifts people to dance. There is no better medicine on our beautiful planet.
I teach rhythm classes from my school of percussion in Witta,'Upbeat Rhythms',and facilitate workshops at festivals and events, ranging from African to Latin ensemble music including,- Afro/Cuban Carnival rhythms, inspired by my latest visit to Cuba.
I am a singer/songwriter, preparing to record my album this year.
My regular performance groups include a Duo act with, singer/guitarist Murray Wall, afro-latin/funk/Jazz band 'WASABI', joined by saxophonist/writer, Johan van Gelder, bass and drums.
My latest band,is latin quartet 'CANTA LA TUMBA',an ensemble exploring Cuban musica tradicional with instrumentation including rich vocals, percussion, guitar, double bass and trumpet.
I co-formed and played with Afro rhythm ensemble 'Zabahtu' for many years. These percussionists now form the core of 10 piece Upbeat Rhythms band,'OBI ABATA', an Afro/Latin folkloric group, based in percussion, song and dance.
