Waikiki Natatorium's Blurbs |
About me:
The Natatorium (n. a swimming pool) serves as a living memorial to the 101 who died and almost 10,000 who served during the first World War in Waikiki.
Its construction is funded by Hawaii’s 1921 Territorial Legislature. It was on August 24, 1927 when the Natatorium was opened, which was also the very birthday of Olympic Gold Medalist, Duke Kahanamoku, a.k.a. godfather of modern surfing. Duke dived in for the first ceremonial swim.
After 30 years of neglect, in 1979, the Natatorium was closed.
