Young Australian pianist/composer Nat Bartsch formed her trio in 2006, showcasing her original compositions and their own arrangements of contemporary songs, particularly from Australian artists such as Crowded House and Something for Kate. Joined by young talents Josh Holt (bass) and Leigh Fisher (drums), their focus lies in creating improvised music with melodic and harmonic beauty and vibrant rhythmic motives. They have performed extensively around the Melbourne jazz scene and released their first self-titled EP in July 2008 which has been broadcast regularly on ABC Classic FM, 3RR and 3MBS. All three members of her trio are graduate students from the Victorian College of the Arts (improvisation), where they were awarded the 2006 Athenaeum Prize for Best Improvisation Ensemble with drummer Jeremy Hopkins. Upon graduation from her degree Nat was also awarded the Lionel Gell Foundation Travelling Scholarship, enabling her to undertake study in Europe in 2008 with Norwegian jazz pianist/composer Tord Gustavsen and Swiss zen-funk composer Nik Bärtsch. Recently Nat returned from a successful Japanese tour, performing her trio compositions in collaboration with bassist Seigo Matsunaga and drummers Akira Nakamura and Sebastiaan Kaptein. They are currently preparing to record their first album in December.
Our show on Fri 11 December at the East Brunswick Club, with a huge line up featuring Mojo Juju and the Snake Oil Merchants and Mikelangelo and the Tin Star; two of our very favourite acts. Hope to see you there
Big gypsy tunes will echo around the centre of Melbourne on Friday 7 August when The Woohoo Revue head up a massive line up of bands and DJs at the Forum Theatre as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival’s Balkan Beatbox Night.
In addition to The Woohoo Revue, the show will also feature such amazing acts as Vardos, BabaGanoush, 13 piece brass band Opa! as well as DJ Gabriele Urban Gypsy (PBS Trans Europa Express).
The combined talents of these performers will make this a rampaging Balkan carnival of oom-pah, gypsy swing and huge brass band sounds.
G'day Nat, Was great to meet you last thursday, sorry for having left a bit early, hope Yugo Fujii showed my message to you, and hope to catch up again some day in Melbourne, Tokyo, or elsewhere around the world. Cheers, do skorogo, S/.
