Fuck college, fuck a "real" job! Music is your life! You're a hometown hero! You're in at least two local bands and are thinking of forming a third. You sleep on your friend's couch, eat your friend's food, and borrow your friend's car. You frequent the dark city bars and hang with the other rockers and groupies. You wear dirty jeans, well-worn t-shirts, and your hair is a mess. You're sinister and mysterious and look as if you don't give a shit. You worship the Rolling Stones, MC5, and your older brother's band. You're gonna make it big one of these days, you can just feel it.
Influences
Robitussin, mostly . . . musically, though, some of my all-time favourites are: John Lennon, those other Beatles, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco, Martha Wainwright, Joni Mitchell, Mike Doughty, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley, Ben Folds, the Clash, Vic Ruggiero, Sam Cooke, Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, old Motown/Atlantic/Chess/ Stax records, the Pogues, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Jack Johnson, the Pixies, The Kinks, The Violent Femmes, John Sebastian, Edith Piaf, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Smiths, Pulp, Blur, John Vanderslice, the Shins, the Zombies, Andrew Bird, The Decemberists, anyone engaging in good ol' fashioned Rock 'n' Roll music, and that sound you make when you slide down a leather couch with no shirt on a hot summer day.
Sounds Like
We're all about good ol rock'n'roll, sometimes dabbling with a folkier sound. Stuff the Beatles would've written during their "Beatles for Sale"/"Help"/"Rubber Soul" days . . . and then immediately thrown out since their stuff was much, much better. I love classic Rock, from the '50s to the '70s, and I try and write in that vein, but I can't deny a certain affinity for the whole singer/songwriter ethos, too. We've been compared to the Beatles (thanks, Mom!), the Kinks, Simon & Garfunkel, the Lovin' Spoonful, and other groups of that particular ilk. Which sucks, since we were mainly gunning for Motorhead and the Slits.
I also just got back from Jamaica with - a whole heap of incredible new ska, rocksteady and early reggae 45s on labels like Beverley's, Top Deck, Tuneico, Treasure Isle and more! - a selection of Jamaican vinyl LPs we've never had in the store before! We've also got a new batch of Roots Reggae titles (not yet available on the regular site) in the CD Sale, and a huge selection of clearance 45s. You can only find out about the Secret Sales by signing up for the Stubborn Records e-mail list at http://www.versioncity.com/lists
Thanks! It's pretty crazy to have two kiddos now. Both boys too - I'm in for all kinds of trouble once the second one gets mobile too!!! When you coming back to AZ to visit??
