After experimenting with several instruments during his childhood and discovering that members of the oppsite sex aren't interested in guys who play baritone horn, Nathan decided to take up electric bass. He began playing seriously at the age of 15, and has been tearing up the Detroit & L.A. music scenes ever since with his distinct brand of intelligent, funky, jazz-infused bass. Nathan currently performs as a sideman and session player for various artists in southern California.
Nathan earned his A.A. in music from Henry Ford College, but attributes some of the best learning in his perpetual musical education to the time he spent in the Detroit music scene. It was in Detroit that Nathan met flutist Alexander Zonjic. As a member of Zonjic's band from 1986-1993, he performed with some of the world's most eminent jazz artists, including Bob James, Earl Klugh, Kirk Whalum, and others. Shortly thereafter Nathan relocated to southern California and eventually hooked up with Detroit buddies Scott Wilkie ( the Scott Wilkie Band ) and Randy Jacobs ( the Boneshakers ).
Nathan can be heard holding down the bottom on releases by Scott Wilkie, The Boneshakers, Patrick Yandall, Jason Weber, Under The Lake, Keith Jacobson, Burt Brion, Kamau Kenyatta and the I-10 Chronicles featuring Charlie Musslewhite, Joe Ely, Eliades Ochoa, Willie Nelson, Adam Duritz, Bill & Bonnie Hearne and many others. In addition to touring with Scott Wilkie & the Boneshakers, he has also toured with jazz guitarist Brian Hughes, Patrick Yandall, and Kerry Warren and performs regularly in southern California with Jason Weber, Kamau Kenyatta and many others.
Also, Nathan is proud to be the bass player for the Blues SchoolHouse Band at the House Of Blues, San Diego.
Hi Nathan! So excited for you to perform at my event at Wokcanos' Long Beach on December 20th with Patrick Yandall! I am honored and thank you! Until Next Time Be GOOD TO YOU!
whadup man? I've mixed countless dudes with basses from Fodera to Tobias no one comes close to your tone. Billy Thompson always said it's in the hands. Must be truth. But I digress if you know of anyone looking for live audio engineer drop my name. Willing to travel. Saw some Coco clips, very cool.
Have you seen/heard the fine, sexy and immensely talented Esperanza Spalding?
It was great to hear you with Patrick Yandall the other night Nathan! Your set ripped!! Don't be afraid of listing some of the lady jazz artists you have performed with in the past too..it's a big wide colorful musical world out there and we like to hear about everyone!! Looking forward to hearing more soon --
