Bilyeu's Record Stands! Mustang senior Kevin Schwab set what would have been a state record by running the 3,200 meters in 9 minutes, 8.36 seconds in Arcadia, CA.
The state mark is 9:22.60 set by Mike Bilyeu of Hale in 1983, but state records must be established in Oklahoma. Schwab finished sixth in the race.
Raymond Flaiz has served in the U S Air Force for 23 years since he graduated from Hale in 1983 - including 10 years (4,200 flying hours) in a C-9A Nightingale hospital plane.
He is currently stationed in South Korea. You can read more about his military career on the "Rangers in the Military" page
/7/07 UPDATE: Lanae tells us that Malese has finished a 3rd and final season in the role of funky and fashionable "Geena Fabiano" for Nickelodeon's hit show "Unfabulous" (airing mid-summer 2007).
She will be a supporting lead role in the live-action adaptation of "Bratz--The Movie" (premiering August 10, 2007), playing the role of "Quinn" in the preppy/popular group of high school girls.
She will also be the subject of a back-to-school editorial for "Sweet 16" magazine, and has just completed her vocal demo CD, which is currently being shopped to major labels. You can hear two of her new songs on her MySpace Music page: www.myspace.com/malesemusic.
Hong Jow, Class of '83 and Lanae Tillery-Jow, Class of '84 are the proud parents of 4 children, including their daughter, Malese. Malese has the recurring role of Geena Fabiano on the popular TeenNick show, "Unfabulous".
The classic-rock thread also runs through the opening act, Strange New Fish - which, says guitarist Pete Banfield, plays "real guitar-oriented, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan kind of music, with songs that are kind of Beatlesque. It's a unique combination."
The songs come courtesy of bassist-vocalist Dart Steed, a longtime member of the Tulsa-area band Square Force, where he played with Strange New Fish drummer Mick Sanders. In fact, some of the numbers they play were first introduced by Square Force.
Banfield, meanwhile, is probably best known in these parts for his work with the former rock band the Private Eyes, although his resume also includes a couple of MTV appearances, a stint on the local show "Night Shift" with a pre-Hollywood Jeanne Tripplehorn, and the sale of four songs, co-written with Matt Harris, to the Walt Disney television series "Emerald Cove." For the past 13 years, he's been teaching guitar at Firey Brothers Music, whose other employees include Steed.
"I'd always wanted to be in a three-piece band with a bass player who sings," he said. "Turns out that it was right under my nose at work."
Strange New Fish hasn't played much in public yet, although the trio has had two high-profile gigs, opening for Kenny Wayne Shepherd at last year's Oklahoma Blues Festival and, more recently, for guitar whiz Monte Montgomery at the Cain's Ballroom.
"We really got an overwhelming response at the Cain's, because the audience was all guitar players," he said with a chuckle. "When you're up there playing, and you hear cheers coming over your solos, you say, 'Yeah, I want to keep doing this.' "
The band plans to record its portion of the Cain's show for a future CD release.
