In addition to composing, Nathan Johnson also plays violin, viola, and piano, as well as some mandolin, cello, penny whistles, recorder, and triangle.

Composer Nathan Johnson holds a bachelor degree in music composition and theory, magna cum laude, from Biola University (La Mirada, CA). While there he studied with Christopher Wills, Dr. John Browning, and Hollywood composer Neil Argo. Prior to Biola, he briefly studied with film/television composers Hummie Mann and Denny Gore. Mr. Johnson is currently studying for his masters degree in composition at California State University, Long Beach, under Dr. Carolyn Bremer and Dr. Robin Cox.
Nathan Johnson’s music has been performed on numerous occasions by the Biola Symphony Orchestra, Biola Youth String Orchestra, I Artisti chamber orchestra (La Mirada, CA), the Abbotsford Youth Symphony Abbotsford, BC), and by multiple chamber groups in concert, recital and church settings.
In 2001 Mr. Johnson won first place in the collegiate division of the Washington state MTA’s Young Composers’ Competition, and in May 2007 he was honored as the Biola University Conservatory of Music Outstanding Musician of the Year in Composition. His work for solo flute, Soundscape, was recently released on CD by the Island Music Guild (Bainbridge Island, WA) as part of project featuring the music of western Washington composers. At Cal. State Long Beach Mr. Johnson is the 2008/09 recipient of the Paul C. Lindsey III Memorial Scholarship for composition and an officer of the Composers’ Guild.
As an instrumentalist, Nathan Johnson has played violin and/or viola with the Kitsap Youth Symphony, Tacoma Youth Symphony, Bremerton Symphony Orchestra, Peninsula Ballet Orchestra, Kitsap Opera Orchestra, Biola University Symphony Orchestra, and in numerous chamber ensembles. He has also been a member of several choirs and vocal groups.
