Since the 1970’s Old City Philadelphia has been the best of what Philly has to offer, and National Mechanics, a Philly born and bred bar and restaurant, is up to the challenge.
The building itself, formerly the premiere underground club “Revival”, is a beautiful Greek Revival building which first housed the National Mechanics bank and later the Norwegian Seamen’s Church. The architect was acclaimed U.S. architect William Strickland whose notable achievements are the Tennessee Capitol Building and St. Steven’s Church in Philadelphia.
Huge columns and massive windows face 3rd. St. while framing the tall wooden doors which lead into a large open room. The bar against the right wall is lined with bottles and friendly staff while old church pew booths and tables elegantly fill the rest of the room. The windows are still the original stained glass and diffuse the light so that during the early evening, the subtle light glances off the many taps, glasses and bottles harkening back to the building’s historical roots.
