The Road to Victory

The National World War II Museum is a special place that encourages learning – at all ages – and millions of Americans have come to recognize and appreciate the significance of World War II and the men and women who led us to victory in this war that changed the world. Our mission is urgent as America is losing 1,500 World War II veterans every day. Their stories need to be preserved so that people today, as well as future generations, will understand why and how World War II continues to influence so many aspects of daily life – civil liberties, global economies and laws, women’s rights, advances in technology and medicine, and most importantly, the values that preserve and protect a free society.

Experience the Victory
November 6 – 8, 2009

It was the War That Changed The World. Now, three remarkable new venues at The National World War II Museum will forever change the way you understand this pivotal event in modern history.

On the weekend of November 6, The National World War II Museum in New Orleans will host a star-studded grand opening for The Victory Theater, The Stage Door Canteen and The American Sector, a Chef John Besh restaurant.

Come Experience the Victory for yourself. Join us in New Orleans November 6 – 8, 2009.

The Victory Theatre
Photobucket The Victory Theater will be the exclusive home to Beyond All Boundaries, a 4-D cinematic experience as epic, as extraordinary as the war itself. This unique experiential journey incorporates theatrical special effects, cutting edge digital technology and original World War II footage. Many of Hollywood’s top stars bring to life the actual words of soldiers and sailors and war correspondents in this powerful, authentic story. The Theater’s state-of-the-art special effects are riveting, but -- most of all -- you will understand as never before the price of freedom.
The Victory Theater

The Stage Door Canteen
Photobucket The Stage Door Canteen is a salute to the WWII era venues that entertained anxious young men and women on their way to war and the A-list entertainers who boosted their morale. The performance and dining venue is an inviting space featuring a signature live show and other entertainment bringing to life the music of the war years.
The Stage Door Canteen

The American Sector
Photobucket The Canteen will segue into The American Sector, a Chef John Besh restaurant. Besh, a renowned chef and James Beard Award winner, served with Marine Forces in the Gulf War. He was a finalist on The Food Network’s The Next Iron Chef and has made numerous appearances on network television. The restaurant, named for the historic area of New Orleans where the Museum is located, will feature a creative approach to classic American cuisine. Join us in New Orleans November 6 – 8, 2009 and Experience the Victory for yourself.

Greatest Generation-A D Day Tribute

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on
other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.
-Dwight D. Eisenhower

Three hundred thousand a year.
They are dying in your hometown,
old men, all but forgotten.

We call them the Greatest Generation;
those that stormed the beaches
and faced the evil empire.
Now they are old men
in the twilight's glow,
slowly slipping away.

Three hundred thousand a year.
They are dying in your hometown,
old men, all but forgotten.

Sixty-five years ago today,
they stormed the beaches
at a place called Normandy.
Sixty-five years ago
they watched friends and brothers
stain the sea and sand
with their blood.

Three hundred thousand a year.
They are dying in your hometown,
old men, all but forgotten.

Upon this strip of land,
now covered with white crosses
and memories of darkness,
soldiers, sailors and airmen
paid the ultimate price
to invade and save
a foreign place.

Three hundred thousand a year.
They are dying in your hometown,
old men, all but forgotten.

Sometimes they can't talk
about the horrors left behind.
Sometimes tears come
and as quick go.
But memories don't fade easily
of the death that surrounded them
on a beach called Omaha.

Three hundred thousand a year.
They are dying in your hometown,
old men, all but forgotten.

At midnight on a moonless night,
the paratroopers ca

D Day

I asked my wife if she knew what day it was.
"June 6th, Just another day I guess."

Do you know what happened to the boys
Drown and shot on Normandy's beaches
All those years ago,
You who value freedom?

We didn't hoist a flag high,
or stop in remembrance like we should.

Down in the bottom of a landing craft,
Doubtful of the outcome of invasion,
A thousand young men
Yield to orders and prepare to attack.

I guess we forget what came before
as we plan for our future.

Drab cliffs and beaches await,
Defended by an enemy strong
And eager to repel our advances.
Young American's died on this day in 1944.

It was the anniversary of D Day,
did you pause to remember on 6 June.

Do not forget the men and boys who died
Doing what their nation asked
Across the seas in 1944 or
Your American fighting men who answer the call today.

I asked my wife if she knew what day it was.
"June 6th, Just another day I guess."

Red Skies on Seven December

To the Congress of the United States:
Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 -
a date which will live in infamy...

Red morning sun rises
slowly over a sleeping bay.
War ships languish at anchor

The United States was at peace with
and, at the solicitation of Japan,
was still in conversation with the government
and its emperor looking toward the maintenance
of peace in the Pacific.

The world would change
with the rising of a red sun,
casting a long shadow.

The Japanese ambassador to the United States
delivered to the Secretary of State
a formal reply to a recent American message.
This reply stated that it seemed
useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations.
It contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

Bombs. Fire. Death. Destruction.
Torpedoes falling, guns blazing.
Red blood upon the Pacific.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan
makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned
many days or even weeks ago.

The grounds shake with explosion
as people scramble
to escape, to defend
to live a moment longer
in the red morning light.

The attack on the Hawaiian islands
has caused severe damage
to American naval and military forces.
Very many lives have been lost.

The world turns on,
painting a different picture
of that December day.
For some, America was innocent,
for some her hands washed in red blood.

The facts of yesterday speak for themselves.
The people of the United States
have already formed their opinions
and well understand the implications
to the very life and safety of our nation.

Red morning sun rises
slowly over another day.
War seems such a way of life
that it's easy to forget
this tragedy after 67 years.

We will not only defend ourselves,
but will make very certain
this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.
Hostilities exist.
There is no blinking at this fact;
our people are in grave danger.
