Formed in 1994 by three Milwaukee based b-boys, Growing Nation is a collective of singers, musicians, songwriters, spoken word artists, and emcees bound together by a love of music, the expression of that love and the desire for growth -- artistic, spiritual and otherwise. Firmly rooted in the rich heritage of Black music -- soul, hip-hop, funk, rock, jazz, and spiritual -- Growing Nations multi-faceted sound is best described as soul music from a b-boys perspective, comprised of love your life songs. In 1999 the Nation evolved by incorporating a live band to further expand its sound and live performance. The Nation sees its charge as continuing the legacy of creating quality music that moves the heart and mind as well as the body. The Nation was named Milwaukees Best R&B/Funk Band for 2004 and 2005 by the Shepherd Express.
Growing Nation has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in Wisconsin's live music scene. Its crowds, typically comprised of people of various ages, races and musical tastes, are given a show that is energetic and uplifting. Given their talent, its no surprise that several of the Nations members also tour with some of the premiere recording artists of our time -- the legendary Patti Labelle, soul luminary Angie Stone, and the Queen of Hip Hop Soul Mary J. Blige. The Nation plays regularly throughout Milwaukee, has played throughout the state of Wisconsin, as well as in Chicago, Atlanta, Marthas Vineyard and at New York Citys world renowned live music venue, S.O.B.s.
