Founded in 1981 by Robert Redford, the Sundance Institute’s original mission was to enhance the artistic vitality of American film through the support and development of independent filmmakers. Since that time, the Institute’s programs have expanded to serve screenwriters, theatre and film directors, playwrights and other artists of vision, and to support the national and international exhibition of independent dramatic and documentary films.
As part of its efforts, the Institute has been developing programs to assist in bringing the resources of the independent filmmaking community to the Native American filmmaking community. Through a multi-staged effort, the Institute intends to serve as a bridge to bring resources, professional support and visibility to the creative work of Native American filmmakers, playwrights and artists.
The Institute’s current programs include the exhibition of Native directed film and video at the Sundance Film Festival each year, the participation of Native American writers and directors in the January Screenwriters Lab and the June Filmmakers Lab, and the sponsorship of Native producers to attend the annual Independent Producers Conference. The Sundance Institute is currently developing other programs to further support the work of Native filmmakers and writers in the years to come.
